SaySomethingin Italian (Beta)

Thank you for news re Italian. I’m looking forward to using the ssiw method to improve my spoken language. It’s the best method of learning for me.

Delighted to read that both French and Italian courses will be available very soon and intend to use them as well as continuing to keep my Welsh going …but I am struggling to access the elements of ssiw that I find most useful.and automatic which is superb now just plays the same sentence over and over for me. It will not move on. What am I doing wrong? I have uninstalled the app on my old android phone and installed the latest app but automagic is still repeating the sentence on which it starts.

Also the new app tells me that I pay a subscription of £3.95 (correct) which started in May 3023- incorrect. I started my subscription in 2011. I would however be more than happy to increase my subscription if automagic works properly for me and/or pay for the new courses when I can access them.

Please can you help me? I admit to having next to no knowledge of computer skills and no confidence in using technology.

Diolch o galon

Judy

There are a number of glitches with the new roll-out which are being sorted out, so have a look at this thread Big news - exciting times - finally, finally we're moving on other languages - #316 by gisella-albertini - one of the tech guys may have already have posted a suggestion to fix this, but I’ll also tag @rich so that he is aware of your post here.

Hi @judithwalsby

Ok, this sounds a bit odd but I’m sure we can get to the bottom of it…

Firstly could I ask you, whether you the App you are using looks like the picture below?

Which course you are using - Welsh - North or South?

Where do you see that subscription start date - normally there is only an expiry date, that is why I ask.

I’m trying to help my mother sign up for a subscription to learn Italian. I am on the £120 per year plan (South Welsh) and she wants the same payment plan, but the only option we can see for her is £12 per month.
Are we being thick and missing something obvious, or has the yearly option really gone away?
@rich can you help?

Actually @verity-davey

… having dug into this I have been surprised to find out that there was an annual subscription option that previously I was unaware of. It was before my time or has never crossed my path - or something!

As Tom has said in the other thread there will be a gift voucher option available very soon! Beyond the short term our plan has always been to have a couple of subscription options. It has just been a matter of priorities - with everything going on here () to get the base level subscription in place.

Thanks for the answer. How soon is “very soon”? And does that advance gift voucher mean a discount, or just paying 12 x £12 up front? My mother has got to the end of the free part of Italian and is impatient to continue, but obviously £24 is a big price difference if waiting will get her a 12 months for 10 deal like mine.

Hi @verity-davey

The development is done - and being tested. It is planned to be available for the first week in December i.e. Not next week but the week after. The detail pricing arrangement is currently being agreed.

If she does one month now and then soon after cancels it so she doesn’t forget and get charged next month, will she still have access for the whole month paid for? And then she can get the other deal when it’s available?
We’re a bit paranoid about forgetting to cancel subscriptions and paying more than we intended, which is why Say Something’s 10 free days without taking payment details was so great for me back in March. Really inspired trust in the company.

Yes, the access remains to the end of the month.

When “sia” is introduced, the prompt is : if it is , but the answer (both voices and written) is " volevo sia "

Thank you for your replies, for your support and fir whatever you did yo make Automagic work well for me. I’ve only just read your messages, because I struggle to use the forum, haven’t the time to work out how to use it fully, and can’t tear myself away from Automagic. It really is Magic. How can I make a one off contribution to SSI in gratitude?

That’s really lovely of you @judithwalsby. There is a PayPal link for donations, but I need to check with our Finance Officer and she’s on compassionate leave at the moment. When she’s back, I can confirm that for you.

If you have PayPal account yourself, you can search for the admin@saysomethingin.com in the section “Send and request” and you’ll be able to send funds directly. I’ve tested my quite old link for donating to SSi, however it doesn’t work anymore. I’ve made monthly donation contract at the time being so I never tested the link after that.

Caution: if you’ll in PayPal type just SaySomethingIn, Say Something In or similar, you won’t get the right company though. You have to search by the email address.

One general question to @rich in addition from me:

How do I restart my Italian course to go from the beginning once again. I’m aware I’ll loose all my progress and belts, but I didn’t do the course for two weeks and I found myself mixing things too much and babbling all the wrong stuff out, so I’d like to restart but I didn’t find the way to do this. If there’s actually no way learner themselves would do that, please be so kind and restart it for me … just Italian please, not all. Will come back into the course in a day to learn again.

Thx.

I’ve sent you a DM with the link to use

Hi, I am using SSi Italian which is in the beta phase.

I am experiencing some glitches:

Firstly, once or twice a word or phrase has been introduced with no time to repeat it or take in its meaning before another new word or phrase is brought in. Pressing revisit doesn’t help because it isn’t actually for repeating the missed word or phrase. Eventually it all falls into place but is frustrating.

Next, white noise on the repeating phase.
After I speak a word or phrase in Italian
the female voice usually chimes in with the word, or phrase said correctly! Three times now the voice has chimed in very belatedly after some white noise.

Lastly, time lag: The correct phrase comes up on the screen in Italian and is remaining there while the English for the next word or phrase is being spoken. Everything then gets out of sync.

Although I think it probably would have made sense for these to be in a separate thread, as you have done, I’ve actually been pointing out these glitches in the “Big news - exciting times” thread itself.

Glitches like these are at least part of the reason why the course is still described as being in Beta; and pointing them out is genuinely helpful to the process of fixing them and getting it beyond that stage. I think the team are possibly already aware of all three of these specific issues, which means that fixes for some or all of them are already on the way - but please do let them know of any more that come up. Ideally, if you can give really specific information as to which word/sound file has gone wrong (eg in the white noise cases), that will probably be even better.

I’ve combined 3 threads about the Italian course into this one here, so the comments are all together.

Prompt “I have, but” ne ho ma - female voice pronounces h as in English, male voice (correctly) doesn’t.
Prompt “the Italian for ‘an’ is” - female voice nothing (weird whiplash snaredrum sound), male voice (correctly) un.
