I know the teal is a small duck but to describe it as a ‘dwarf duck’ (corhwyad) seems a bit harsh!
A couple of photos here of ffwng taken last week in Pen Llyn - I’ve no idea of the names in Cymraeg, nor even in Saesneg - hopefully ramblingjohn’s encyclopaedic knowledge of pethau ffwng will come to the rescue! This one from Nant Gwrthyern
and this one from a field rising towards Mynydd Carreg, near Porthor (Whistling Sands)
Printed 2012. I doubt there’s a newer one. I meant, but didn’t word it well, that other dictionaries might be better. I got it because my poor little pocket Collins-Spurrell (1960s) was very out of date and I’ve been disappointed by the fact that I can still find some things in there and not in the modern GM!! You may well do better on line as @craigf suggests!
Thank you! I think I’m going to buy it anyway, just because using paper dictionaries is slightly more convenient for me, especially when translating something! I’m not a technophobe, but I suppose I just got used to the paper ones at university and can’t really change now:)
P.S. I’m going to post a big spider in my next post, I hope it won’t be too scary. I just found it fascinating, because I had never seen this type before in the mainland Russia. I’m going to write a big “copyn alert” but I though I might warn you in advance.
I could quote your entire post and say, well the first part is me too. I only go on line if I draw a blank in both dictionaries!! For the bit I actually quoted… thanks for the warning!!
Copyn alert!
Found it on a bush near the shore. It’s not macro, the spider is actually about 7 or 8 cm big. Even as an arachnophobe, I still found it quite beautiful, though I don’t know which species exactly it belongs to.
I think your first image is the ‘cap inc carpiog’ - shaggy ink cap.
The second looks like a member of the Cap cwyr teulu - wax cap family.
My extensive knowledge is i’m afraid limited.
Nor do i but i think if you look up argiope family you may be in the right area.
I have been away for a few days, so sorry about the slow replies.
Cheers J.P.
Well, it does look very similar to the Argiope bruennichi spider, thanks a lot for the help! I like it that they’re also called wasp-spiders:)
I was in Cardiff today for a few hours and was lucky enough to spend time in the Castle.
The clock tower sure is ornate but the clock time was wrong!
One of the towers has wonderfully ornate lead work.
Some of the rooms are ornate to say the least and be assured these few snaps show a very small part of what is to be seen. (click image for full size).
Siglen lwyd - Grey wagtail.
Ji-binc - Chaffinch.
Touring an old mill on the Gower i noticed this rocking horse carved from a single piece of wood, never seen one like it before.
Cheers J.P.
Park Mill? I don’t recall the rocking horse, but I may have not noticed it!
p.s. I know people say ‘the Gower’ but we always tried to point out politely that it is Gower or ‘the Gower peninsular’!!
re: Cardiff Castle, I must say I have never liked the taste of the Marquis of Bute!!
I love your wagtail, a beautiful picture!!
Maybe that’s why I found it so much less skin-crawling than most spiders?? Really quite pretty!!!
Diolch JP! Wela i chdi yfory am y crwydro gobeithio. Hwyl fawr, John
Broga coed: Tree frog
This species is not native to Florida and they eat the smaller native tree frogs. They change their color to match their environment. They can get a very weird looking greyish-white.
Cuban tree frog
Oh, I’m very glad you liked it:) Personally, I found that the more I learn about insects, the less scary/unpleasant they become to me. But I still prefer amphibians and reptiles:)
Fantastic. Did you take that yourself?! Where is it?
Yes, I took the photo myself. That’s why it’s blurry, LOL. It was actually in my yard along the edge of the lake. I was pretty excited when I saw it. There was no place to hide so I had to be quick to get the pic before I scared it off.
Must be fantastic to live in a place where an eagle can land in your yard!
Wow, Craig, awesome photo! People go to incredible lengths to get photos of bald eagles and you had one in your yard!
It is nice. Being on a lake helps a lot. It attracts more wildlife.
It was lucky for sure. I just wish I had more time to get a more in focus picture.
