What language would you like us to build next?

In here for requests! But NOT here for bug reports - over to Bug reports for the new app (Tom's PWA) for them, please and thank you  :folded_hands:

We’ve just released Swahili and Swedish - not because I’m getting alphabetical! - Nepali is currently in production - we’re not unlimited yet, it depends on where we can get decent LLMs and decent voices - we’re working on a non-LLM build layer for volunteers which will make it possible for anyone to build a course for any language, but that’s going to take a little longer.

So in the meantime, choose away! Particularly if your choice is on this list:

Wow!
I have to ask, having looked at the list: have you chosen Kenyan or Tanzanian Kiswahili?

At the rate they are adding courses on that thing, it’ll probably be both within a month. :joy:

Ah, interesting question - it didn’t offer us a choice on the translation, but you just inspired me to go and double check the voices, and those were listed separately, and we had one Kenyan and one Tanzanian! So I’ve changed that to both Kenyan and rebuilt, and thank you very much for the question :joy:

If you go to the web browser app at saysomethingin.app (link below)
you’ll find that Greek is already available.

Hebrew would be cool. I know it decently, but would love to revise and improve.

I just saw that Arabic dialects are on the list! Are those potential candidates?

Oh wow, I had no idea about this. Brilliant news! Diolch

Estonian! And I’d also be interested in the Arabic dialects (especially Syria and Lebanon) if that’s a possibility.

North Sámi would be amazing, but it’s not on the list and as a minority language, I doubt that there’s much LLM support available for it.

From that list, I’d say Persian, but I’m aware that’s already kind ar y gweill.

Thanks Richard, for some reason I haven’t been able to access SSI via a web browser (well, the web browsers that I use anyway) for some while now. That must be why I was unaware of the course.

Edit: I see @RichardBuck got there before me. :joy:

Arabic please - specifically a Levantine variety.

Arabic is on the current main app as one of our paid-for languages - I think it’s Egyptian Arabic, but I think we also have plans to do some more country specific courses later on - they’re not going to be part of our free offering, though - the idea is that 10 paid for languages - English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and Arabic - fund the development and hosting for all the other languages

North Sámi - we’ve got a few days work coming up next week on a build layer for languages which aren’t well supported by LLMs - once we’ve done that, anyone will be able to build any SaySomethingin language they’d like, so it would just be a matter of finding the people who’d like to do it

Otherwise in here, I’m seeing requests for Hebrew, Estonian and Persian, so I’ll crack on with those.

I’ll pop this here so it’s together with the other suggestions - one of our Welsh learners mentioned that she was starting the French course because she’s planning a trip to Canada and will be spending time in Quebec, which made me think … Quebecois?

Is it possible to make courses for Welsh speakers with this new tool? I would love be able to work on my French or Swedish whilst getting in some really good Welsh listening practice. I tried a little of the Irish for Welsh speakers and I really enjoyed it but I only have capacity to work on two languages at the moment.

Quebecois would be super interesting, and we have connections who would be able to proof it - let’s flag that up in #cyhoeddi as a similar project to Mexican Spanish and so on…

Courses for Welsh speakers - yes, absolutely, and I’d hope that we’d be onto this before the end of this year - but I’m very keen to do Welsh courses for speakers of other languages first…
