Welsh version of Wordle -- Gairglo

Sorry to revive this topic, bot I’d just like to let you know, that Gairglo is obviously no more. It says that domain hiriaith.cymru has expired and is parked free to purchase it (as I understand the message).

I’m really sorry to see the Gairglo go. But, who knows, maybe the creator decides to put it back on, who knows.

Oh, that’s a shame!

However it’s understandable, because it takes a lot of time to run and update websites for learners.
And I would guess, that similarly to Parallel.Cymru, with all the praise and articles, and 1 million speakers goal etc creators at some point considered they might get funds or help by some institution. But that obviously didn’t come. And sometimes - I have heard from more than one source - even quite the opposite, even got an hostile reaction (not from learners, from some people in the establishment so to speak).

That’s a pity but still hope that in the future people will cooperate more, at least in the let’s say “independent” teaching world and help all the interesting project to carry on!

I’m sorry that Gairglo has gone. I have to admit that after playing for a while, I’d not looked at it for ages, but I had recently wondered about trying it again. But that’s the problem when a site is just the personal project of one person. They move on in their lives, other things become more important and something has to be dropped.

I know there are at least two other Wordle clones for Welsh, but as far as I know, it was only Gairglo that did it with the proper Welsh alphabet and accents.

Well, I believe @gisella-albertini and @margarethall, that was the case. I know that at the beginning of this year the creator asked people to donate certain amount of money for the website to go on, however, obviously, there was not enough donations, if any at all, so the creator obviously decided that this is it and the site was live as long as domain was payed and did not expire. He had to pay for the domain anyway and if no one answers when asking for help, it could be obvious that there’s no interest in the website and product anymore, so why paying something no one uses or has the interest in.

To be honest, I didn’t do much of gairglo either, however I and @brigitte did it every Saturday when we usually have our weekly conversation in Welsh. It was kind of “ritual”. First some talk about what has happened during the week and what might come in in the next one (all in Welsh of course) and then there was the time for the Gairglo. I also have to say that there were impossible words presented to us sometimes but we are obviously good enough at it as we’ve found the word more or less every time. So, yesterday when we had our weekly conversation again, there surely was missing something.

I know Wordle has some other Welsh word games, but I didn’t try them yet so I can’t say are they as good as Gairglo or not. I’m not sure, but I might do some testing in the future to see if there’s something we might use.

I play(ed) Gairglo almost every day and really enjoyed it. When I visited the hiriaith.cymru website about a week ago, I got an error message, as if the site were down. Now my bookmark goes to hiriaith.cymru/lander, but the landing page is blank. I was hoping that meant the site was under reconstruction, but apparently not. Thanks for the additional information, Tatjana. I was hoping someone here would know what happened.

Two other games are Dyfalair: Dyfalair - Gêm eiriau dyddiol
and Cyrdle: CYRDLE

Neither one is as good as Gairglo, IMO, because they both use English or modified English keyboards, and stick to common words. But they may be easier for beginners who are hoping to win occasionally as they build vocabulary.
