I enjoy learning about the Welsh diaspora to Patagonia, Australia, America, Kent, etc - but have just been blow away by discovering that, Donetsk in the Ukraine is a city founded by a Welshman, John James Hughes. It’s a person I’d never heard of 'til today but something I will be investigating. From what I’m reading it’s quite possible that once Welsh could have been heard on the streets of Donetsk. There’s even statues to him in the city…Anyone have any information on his history?

Gwyn Alf Williams made a short series about the city - here’s a bit of it. (Along with a talk about the making of the series.)
