Years before I was actively learning Welsh, there was the series called “A Mind to Kill” starring the very talented, and sadly no longer with us actor Philip Madoc.
The English versions were shown in England, but there were also apparently Welsh versions (although you can only get the English versions on DVD ).
Re: Evening classes: I’ve never lived in Wales, but from my fairly long experience with (mostly language) evening classes in England, I think a lot of people go for mostly social reasons, or used to, when they were cheap.
Well, it’s a nice, civilised atmosphere, with people interested in the same subject(s) as you are, and you can make new friends if you wish, and it does stretch the mind somewhat.
But I got the feeling over the years that quite a lot of people weren’t interested in being stretched all that much. (and perhaps after a hard day at work, who could blame them).
But there was rarely if ever all that much emphasis on speaking, and not enough opportunity to speak for those who wanted to. It was obvious that one needed to do a lot more work outside of the class than was done actually in it, but not everyone would have the motivation or perhaps the opportunity (to put it into practice by speaking).
I don’t know what the answer is, but as we all here know, technology has made a lot of things possible that were not possible in the good (?) old days of evening classes. (And evening classes are rather expensive nowadays, at least where I live. I’d rather put the money towards some good books/audiobooks/DVDs…etc ).
Yup, I remember the Welsh version being shown, and was looking to get hold of a copy a while ago. My feelings were the same as yours on finding only the English language versions were available!
It’s a shame we are missing out on something like this with an actor of the calibre of Philip Madoc.
