Emergency request for Welsh video

The title is rather cryptic, but here is what it is about. A friend (here in the US) is on an “international scavenger hunt” team which has this as one of the things they need to get:
This is a real Welsh word:
“Llanfaurpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.” Find a
Welsh person and have them say in Welsh “I am Welsh and I hate that I
have to do this,” and then they must say the lengthy word 3 times,
without stuttering and without reading it.
It also needs to be a video. I could do it, if I were sure of the correct idiomatic way of saying “I hate that I have to do this.” (I learned how to rattle off Llanfair PG a long time ago.) They think they should have someone born in Wales, though they’re willing to let me do it if we can’t find someone better in time. The emergency part is that they need it no later than tomorrow. (Also, I notice that they mis-spelled Llanfair…)

If you can help (in any direction) please let me know asap. A diolch yn fawr iawn!

I’d gladly help, only I’ve never learned how to say Llanfair PG!

Ah, gishwhes. :sunny:

This sounds like the oddest request I’ve heard in a while, but in a fun kind of way.
I hope you find someone.
(I am unable to help on at least two counts…sorry  )

Sorry - bad timing for something like this to be happening while everyone’s at the Eisteddfod! Hope you found someone :sunny:

That’s what I told the friend who needed the film - that the Eisteddfod had most of the Welsh-speakers in Wales busy. In the end her team decided someone not actually born in Wales but with Welsh ancestry (like me) would work, so I made a vid for her yesterday. After the scavenger hunt is over, I’ll post it if anyone is interested.

As Aran says - late to the party - sorry!

Just in case you still need anything: www.saysomethinginwelsh.com/fideos/LlanfairPG.3gp

However - “read” the instructions in Welsh, if they are looking for someone who is a Cymro (or rather a Cymraes), then you do fit the bill. Geography and genetics are a very poor marker for who is or is not a member of an ethnic group, but language is a far stronger, more concrete bond. So being “Welsh” tends to mean born in Wales, or being somehow of Welsh descent, but bein a Cymro can be one of those, but it’s very much a linguistic thing as well.

So, you are fully qualified!

I love the plug at the end, Iestyn! I’ll let them know that, if they want someone “more Welsh” than me, they can use this. Or maybe Fancyflautist (the other person who posted about the scavenger hunt) will want to use it.

Shouldn’t this be added to the SSi youtube channel? There must be a fair few people who search for how to say llanfairpg…

Incidentally, (for non Iestyns), this song is not a bad way to learn how to pronounce it

This is the best thing I’ve ever seen in a long time! Diolch yn fawr iawn @theblacksparrow! I love this one, really.

I learned to say it from a piece many years ago (before SSiW) on WRI - Wales Radio International. I downloaded the piece to my computer all those years ago so I have it if someone wants it (mp3 format). But I searched for it online and found a lot of (old) links to the original story which, however, has apparently disappeared.

EDIT: I’ve uploaded the track to Soundcloud. It is a bit more than 5 minutes long; and here it is:

Really interesting this. I’m Anglo- Welsh genetically, born in England but it wasn’t really until I came out as a (sort of) Welsh speaker that the jokey comments about sheep, lack of vowels, burning cottages (vintage!) started. Funnily enough, the more low-level racism I’ve experienced, the more Welsh I feel😜

I have now received permission to share the vid I made, since the scavenger hunt is over.

You have perfect “storytelling” voice. And, for my ear, you did perfectly.

Well, I once was curious how this sounds and since I wasn’t on this forum yet I used IVONA TTS Geraint voice to say it for me. Not perfect but in comparrison to the recordings I’ve heard it’s quite good anyway. Out of (any) interest, here it is:

Aha, and @sionned to post player on here you need just paste the link (pure link) so your post form soundcloud not appearing as a player has maybe to do something with permissions of embeding. I’ve played with embeding your previous link tested various codes, but nothing could put it on here the way this mine (or any others) is.

Figured that out and have edited that one too. Thanks!
