Not sure how many of you may be on Facebook, but this discussion is happening there too. If you join forces, you could get quite a crowd together!
I’m not on Facebook myself but I have a feeling that @Peter_J knows the person organising this. Hopefully, we can sort something out between us.
So, a couple of us are meeting up at 10am on Monday, September 9th at the Open House Deli in Winchester. It will be a relaxed, informal chat over a cup of coffee (or whatever takes your fancy) and a chance to practice as much or as little Welsh as you’re comfortable with.
Anyone who wants to come along is welcome, whether you’re a brand new learner or a fluent Welsh speaker.
Since we’ve had interest from people in different locations, the plan is to rotate venues for subsequent meetings.
Address and directions for the Open House Deli:
Open House Deli, 4a Middle Brook St, Winchester SO23 8AQ
Hi,
I’m so glad you’re getting the meet ups going, sorry I haven’t been in touch, been on my jollies to the glorious Bannau Brycheiniog no phone signal or internet but waking up to pen Y fan and all the beautiful falls has been so refreshing…
Needless to say I’m behind on my homework and still need to get using what I’ve learnt.
I’m afraid can’t make this meet but hope it all goes well and you have a lot of fun.
Pob lwc
No problem. Sounds wonderful. I was in that part of the world myself a few weeks ago, although it already feels like forever ago.
Our next meetup is 10am on Monday September 16th at the Old Forge Tea Room in Hambledon.
Sorry I missed this - are the meet ups always on a Monday? I’m in Alresford near Winchester but am not able to do Mondays
No, it just worked out that way for the first couple. We can meet on a different day, depending when everyone can make it.
I’ve created a new thread specifically for posting details of meetups:
Hi.
I’d be interested in this if this gets some steam.
I’m only on challenge 16 level 1 so very very new to this, so maybe beyond my skill set & live in Farnham Surrey which is relatively close to Winchester .
We’re meeting at 10am on Monday 23rd September in Josie’s Cafe, Bishop’s Waltham. It’s a pretty small group at the moment but this will be our third meeting. The more people who get involved, the more steam it will have.
Learners of all levels are welcome, so you won’t be out of your depth. The earlier you start having conversations in Welsh, the quicker you’ll learn. I’ve just started level 2 and, now that I’ve finally started having regular conversations in Welsh, I realise there was no reason not to do it much sooner. I hope you can join us.
Helo, helo!
Dw i’n byw yn Shaftesbury (the very heart of Wessex, surely?) and I might try to get along to the meeting on Monday. Mind you it’s the best part of an hour and a half from here so… a future meeting in Salisbury would be good.
Shaftesbury aka Caer Paladwr could host a meeting sometime…
That is a decent drive away but I hope you can make it. I’m sure we could travel to your neck of the woods for a future meeting.
It’s great that we have so many people interested in meeting up. If we could get a few more people along to the meetups, that would be even better.
Realistically, I know that not everyone will be able to get to every meeting but if we can get enough people together and ensure that most of us can get to most meetings, then we’ve got a pretty solid foundation.
I hope that we can get a few more people along on Monday, but if anyone wants to suggest a time and place for a subsequent meeting, then feel free. The more opportunities we can create for people to meet up and practice their Welsh, the better.
Hwyl
The next meeting is Monday September 30th at 10am, at No. 60 Coffee and Wine Bar in Bishop’s Waltham. It’s a nice location, easy to get to, and plenty of parking. Most of the local car parks give you an hour for free but, if you park in the Jubilee Hall car park, you get two hours free parking.
Once again, everyone is welcome and, as always, if you want to meet up but can’t make this one, then please feel free to suggest a time and place for a subsequent meeting.
Posted this in completely the wrong place:
“Bishop’s Waltham again this week, 10:30am tomorrow (Monday). We’re meeting in Costa Coffee this time against all better judgement. The other two places were really nice but also really busy. Will drinking terrible coffee be a worthwhile price to pay to hear each other speaking Welsh? Time will tell.
If anyone has a suggestion for a venue that does good coffee and you can hear yourself think, then please let me know. Free parking would be nice too - two hours for free is hard to beat.”
As always, if anyone can’t make it on a Monday morning, we can arrange meetups for a more suitable time and place.
Found this too late for this week.
Will have a think about suitable locations but I’m a tea drinker.
Next meetup is 10:30am, Monday October 21st in Costa, Bishop’s Waltham. Turns out, the coffee’s not as bad as I remember, and we could actually hear each other speak.
Meetings are now every Monday morning at 10:30am in the Crown Inn, Bishop’s Waltham. Learners and Welsh speakers of all levels are welcome to join us for informal conversation over a cuppa (or the beverage of your choice).
Drop me a message if you want to come along, so we know to expect you, and so I can let you know about any changes, which won’t always be posted here. When you come to your first meeting, you’ll be invited to join the WhatsApp group so you can chat with the group and keep up to date with the meetings.
Hi, are you still meeting at the Crown? I live in Waltham Chase.
Thanks
Martin
Hi Martin,
Yes, we are still meeting there and it would be good to see you there if you are able to join us. I don’t get there as often as I would like but I hope to be there this coming Monday.
I’m tagging @iuanto, the ‘organiser’ for his info.
Jonathan
Hopefully see you both there.
