To Australia: Diolch yn fawr iawn!! And to Bernard Foley…diolch, diolch, diolch!!! I was so pleased to see him, not Quade Cooper!! Do you think Australia might give us a better chance by playing Cooper next week??? Oh, and all this on British TV about England ‘The’ Host Nation!! Since we provided a stadium, it seems to me we are joint host nations, so, if we did happen to manage to get to the final…and it is a big ‘if’… maybe we could move it to Cardiff???
oh, and I can’t resist adding…
I was waiting someone else would be first to post something in here. I’ll add just this:
And yes, in a way Cymru is host nation too and I’m glad to see this result although I’m a bit sorry for English fans and team. So many jokes now circling on the net about all this and some of them aren’t even a bit tasty neither pleasant. …
Very happy. Problem solved. Wallabies and Cymru through, England out. Repairs some of the heart-break damage I suffered years ago watching Wilkinson beat us in the final with that drop goal.
in 1991!!!
'03. Too young to remember 91. Although would have been good.
Great game England and Australia , Australia showing great passion to excel in the set pieces, and to run the ball effectively and England showing that just having big forwards and not being able to change a game plan is costly this opens the tournament up but I think we havn’t seen the last of Argentina, and the French are very quiet, Japan had a good win so it looks interesting for the rest of the tournament .
I guessed that! It was me who was there in '91 At the Final, I was one of the ‘Welsh Aussies’ behind a row of ‘Irish Aussies’ and, I guess a lot of other ‘Honorary Aussies’ sharing a paper with the words of the new anthem, “Advance Australia fair!” (The real Aussies behind us needed to read it too, the anthem was that new!!)
p.s. Last evening, on TV, I heard an English ‘pundit’ moaning that “now we have to play a silly meaningless game against the minnows of Uruguay”. I wanted to hit him and point out the the amateurs of Uruguay had to play a load of games even to get to the Cup, whereas England got in based on the last one and then got the easiest possible path with the maximum possible time between games!! Sorry, any English SSiWs, it is people like him who inspire me to cheer for Uruguay next weekend!!
If it wasn’t for success at sport most Aussies would still need help learning the words haha. Given how their tournament has gone, I wouldn’t worry about the pundit. Paid to get people talking about them, not to deliver insightful, knowledgeable information.
Lets just hope Cymru and Wallabies just have a relaxing game against each other and make sure nobody gets injured.
There was a nice post on Twitter saying something like ‘So I suppose the Wales Australia game next week is just going to be 30 men in party hats giving each other high fives, then?’… ![]()
[Bit too much riding on it for that…;-)]
It was “Welsh DaiLama”'s if I remember correctly. I’ve read it for sure too. Yah that one i liked the most.
wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen grown men have a nice relaxing game with a stocked esky (cwrw of course
) keeping them company. Admittedly, sunday cricket in the country is a tad different…
Was anyone else impressed by Uruguay and sorry for th poor lad who was sent off? I kept wondering what it is like to be an amateur playing huge, fit, fast Fijians and being refereed in a language they speak and you are learning? Imagine being refereed in Cymraeg by a ref from Patagonia and not getting frustrated!! (I’d probably end up hitting the ref!!!).
Yes, I thought that was very harsh, and not in keeping with the spirit of the game - he’d never have given a red card if that had been a Tier 1 player in a knock-out game. I didn’t even think it was a yellow - just a stern talking-to. Mind you, the yellow for the guy who got pushed over looked even less reasonable!
I’ve been playing around with my scenarios spreadsheet looking at permutations for the quarter finals. From what I can tell, if we win on Saturday the chances are that we will play Scotland (winnable, but my family won’t speak to me until this time next year - actually I’ll take that
) , followed by France, again winnable especially with the team pumped up with what happened four years ago, and then New Zealand in the final (which, naturally we’ll lose).
However, if Australia win on Saturday, we most likely meet South Africa, and in the unlikely event that we scrape through that, New Zealand in the semi.
Anyone who thinks Saturday is about turning up and slapping each other on the back is so, so wrong!
Bit late in the day, aren’t you? Everyone else did that about 3 years ago…![]()
Yup. The thing is, despite a few upsets, the quarter finals look pretty much as they were predicted to be back then. The only real contention was over which two teams would get out of the ‘pool of death’.
Oh ye of little faith.
I like to think we’d take the jokes in the same spirit…
Team wearing armbands… (Struggling in the pool…)
Or waiting for the AA lorry… (Struggling with the breakdown)
I think my favourite was on Jonathan after the Wales/ England game…
Q: “Why have the England squad gone on a speed awareness course?”
A: “They didn’t want the three points…”
I’ve actually refrained from sharing EVERYTHING that’s crossed my wall out of pity!
Anyone see the Georgia, Namibia a good game both teams giving their all with Namibia coming close at the end . A lot of yellow cards I thought some however, were correct but some of the rules are slowing the games.
Can you explain why Sakartvelo (Georgia) didn’t get a penalty try at the end of the first half? In other games, after loads of penalties at scrums have clearly been for infringements which were all that stopped the attacking team getting over the line, there has been a sending off and a penalty try. Yesterday, the prop got sent off, but all that happened then was an ‘uncontested scrum’ which, of course, removed all the advantage the attacking team had been getting from their better, stronger scrum!! It seemed thoroughly bad refereeing to me.
O.K. I know some of the…maybe even most of the Sakartvelo team had been getting frustrated, losing their cool and getting penalised, but that should not effect the decision about that scrum. I know Namibia were a less highly rated team, so everyone was on their side. I know that what I found out about Georgia, including that it is really Sakartvelo, made me support them... but??? ![]()
