I am almost at the end of level 3. When new content is added to the app, roughly how long will I have to leave it running before it gets to where I am? There’s around 38 hours of challenges going by the mp3 files’ length, but does the app have more or less repetition? How fast can it go if left playing and “thinking” you’re finding it really easy?
I know the skip button is also an option, but leaving my phone chatting in a corner just seems less hassle than sitting with it, hitting skip over and over and over.

I’m not sure I’ve understood you here - if you’re talking about your progress levels, they should always be maintained - so as new content comes in, since you’re almost at the end of what’s available, it should naturally be available to you very soon

I understood @verity-davey to be asking how long it will take - given that Rich said there’s more content in the new app courses - for the app to catch up with where she’s got to already on the Challenges, so that she can then carry on with the new app beyond the end of Level 3.

Exactly that. As I understand it, even though I’ve ticked off each challenge in the email course interface, the app doesn’t track that progress.

Yes, it’s entirely separate - although it syncs with the web-based version of the new content, and I think also with the existing Automagic (once it crosses off a few items from its internal checklist), it can’t take the Challenges into account. I did Level 3 years ago, as it came out, so I confess that I haven’t even tried the new app for Welsh, as I don’t want to go all the way back to “Dw i eisiau siarad” - so I’ll be interested to see if there’s a solution.

Embarrassingly, I’ve obviously got a ‘Monday morning brain’ thing going on - because I didn’t understand your explanation either, Richard, although it looks very clear at the individual word level! :joy:

Er, is it about more Welsh content post-Level 3? I’m sorry, I know it’s a bit frustrating communicating with someone whose brain is not being co-operative! :flushed:

I’m not sure if it’s specifically post-Level 3 as such, but if Verity leaves her phone chuntering away to itself, how long will it take to reach any significant content she hasn’t already covered in the Challenges? (Given that she’s already nearing the end of Level 3.)

Unlike the newer courses which are being developed from scratch, the Welsh courses in the app are pretty much the same material that you get in the Levels transferred into the new methodology. At the moment, we’re still getting Level 3 south across into the app, but we haven’t got any material beyond that as yet.

Yes, post-level 3. I have almost finished the challenges so am sticking with them, but when more advanced content gets added to the app, how long will it take my phone to run through all three levels so I can access the new stuff?
I know there’s no new content there yet, I’m just anticipating, and curious as to how the speed / amount of repetition compares between challenges and the app.

Login woes again: mostly peculiar to me, sort of solved, hiding boring details to avoid clutter.

Summary

I got excited by the mention of Italian “there by the time you read this” in the cylchlythyr and went to look for it in the app. It wasn’t there, so I thought I’d try logging out & back in. I logged out, and now can’t get back in on the app or the Web app. I’ve tried clearing the cache on the Android app, but no difference - I’m getting “Invalid user or password” although I did once get something different, that specified something like “user doesn’t exist”. Android 14. Paging @rich and possibly @Kinetic.

ETA I think this is a syncing problem that I’ve brought on myself, somehow. When we were first trying out the new app, I changed my password slightly: possibly as a consequence of being in the forum and the app and the Web app and old Automagic all at the same time in different browsers on different devices, it sometimes seems to revert to the old one. I’ve fixed this now by logging in to old Automagic on my laptop with the old password (which shouldn’t have worked), “changing” it in old Automagic to the new one, and then logging back in on the app. Argh.

Hi @RichardBuck

Ok, thanks for that feedback and your perseverance. We’ll work through this and see what we can glean from it.

Thanks

Rich :slightly_smiling_face:

I am very late to the party here, but the new languages are super exciting. I haven’t done any Welsh ones for a few years now cos I’ve got to the point where I just use it daily in life/work/the pub now, but I’ve been doing the French one since discovering the new languages and it’s amazing so far. It’s surprising how much French I remember from GCSE over 20 years ago. The SSi method really is amazing: within 1/2 hour I was able to surprise my old boss by speaking a bit of French with her! Now I just need to do the full immersion and start listening to French radio, podcasts, and TV, and try find some French speaking groups near Cardiff.

I’ve seen Punjabi on that list of OpenAI languages…is that one that is coming soon?
Diolch yn fawr eto!

I’m finding it impossible to skip past the same “Your brain has {large number of} neurones” speech. I skip ahead, get a new belt/stripe, get one new sentence, then get the same speech every time. EDIT: This seems to happen consistently when skipping forwards during one of the speeches (happens repeatedly with a later speech too), meaning ultimately you have to listen to them all eventually, even if you’ve already heard them during other languages’ courses on Automagic.

Ok, got past it. But I noticed the man’s way of saying the Spanish for just “or” (without any other words around it) is strange - it’s like “o”, but then followed by a strange sound like the start of a different word. And the woman also has a strange “eee” sound on the end of “mejorar” when just “to improve” is the prompt.

I’m wondering if the app sound files have been checked by native speakers.

We’re possibly going to add a skip over those encouragement chats in a future version, but for the moment, the best thing is just to allow them to finish, otherwise they will come back again

We’re still making a few tweaks to the sound files - the main problem is with short words when they’re not in a phrase. Sometimes they don’t come out quite right, but generally after that when they’re used in context, they’re fine.

Hello,

Is there an ETA on the Italian course please?

Italian is now in Alpha! Which means that Alpha testers can access it now please ping Rich to see if he can add you to the Alpha Testers group

Yes, we’re really sorry about this. It’s.a known issue and we are trying to work out how to resolve it.

I can sympathise completely. I’ve been testing a bunch of the courses and I feel like I’ve had the encouragements so often that they don’t feel like encouragements any more!

How long do you anticipate alpha testing will take? For that matter, when might French drop the “(Beta)”?

Ok, so courses will stay in beta until all the sound files have been verified. Which could be a while since there’s about 30,000 sound files per course!

Beta means ‘it works perfectly but there are bound to be a few things like the odd audio file here and there.’

However, we expect most courses to stay in beta for a good slug of time, while we improve them based on user feedback. Probably around 3-6 months.
