Big news - exciting times - finally, finally we're moving on other languages

Hi @SteakAndEggs

Fantastic - thanks for letting us know…and allowing us to narrow down the search too. Kinetic is working on Welsh courses at.the minute () so I’ll pass this on.

Curious to know how reliable the ‘Stats’ page is on the new App. See attached. I spent some time on the App yesterday (30 Sep), but nothing is recorded; whereas something has been recorded for today (1 Oct), but I haven’t used it. Any explanation? Thanks. Bill Evans

Hi @Bill_Evans

Well that is interesting. What time zone are you in - the UK?

Thx

Let’s keep @Kinetic busy!
I came across three more mentions of the ‘feeling’ setting today in the northern Welsh course. It was while walking the dog, so I hope that I have remembered the locations correctly.

The first was shortly after the introduction of ‘y’ as ‘the’ in ‘y cyfle’.
The second was between the points where ‘liciwn i’ and then ‘efo chdi’ got their first mentions.
The third was immediately before ‘mi fedra i’ was presented.

Excellent, gold star! :star2:

I will pass that on, thank you for your help.

Thanks Rich, but I can’t seem to get back to the white belt, I’m stuck on yellow belt content. Which is above my level. The revisit button only takes me back to the beginning of the yellow belt content. This is in the app version. So I’m having to use the automagic via the web page instead.

A couple of general questions regarding the French version of the app.
When bugs are fixed and updates released, do I need to do anything at the user end, or will the version I’m using update automatically?
Also, if I DO log out and back in again, will I automatically return to the same place on the course, or will I revert to the beginning?

@ingridjukes To help me research this, could you keep a record of what is introduced to you in the app? For example, could you play it forward and allow it to make a couple of new introductions, then click Revisit as many times as you want to move back to where you think you should be in appropriate material and let it play again, noting what it introduces then for the next 2 or 3 introductions.

If you click on my name and send me the information in a Private Message, that won’t clog up the forum for others

Note that the app doesn’t remove a Belt from you once you’ve reached it. So you could have got to Yellow Belt, then decide to go back quite a way but the app will still have you on Yellow Belt. It’s not directly related to the material you’re learning.

I know you are optimistic about rolling out new languages very quickly once you’ve a stable, relatively bug-free app. I am curious to know where you think you are in the bug-squashing process, for example when you think Italian might launch, but arguably more important is the work on languages that can’t be done by AI.
When might we see a full course of Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Cornish, or Breton?
Would you ever have fun with the fuzzy boundaries of language/dialect and create a course for something linguists argue over like Scots, or something pretty much everyone agrees is a dialect yet still has heaps of unique vocabulary like the Yorkshire dialects? (I think I heard that Duolingo did these, possibly just as a gimmick.)
How about Esperanto or other conlangs?
I seem to remember a demo Say Something in Latin once existed. Would that ever make a comeback?

Hi @thomas-jones-1

As new courses become available, the App will pick them up automatically…and your progress will resume from ‘the nearest place that is equivalent’ in the new course - which will almost always be where you left off!

We have a new version of French we we are testing at the moment where one of the things we are doing is checking that progress carries over.

Some of these are answered in a reply up-thread: see the second paragraph here… Big news - exciting times - finally, finally we're moving on other languages - #50 by aran

Forgot to say…you should be able to log out of a device and log back onto this device - or another - and carry on.

We only have one central record of progress which is drawn upon by any of the Apps.

With two Esperanto speakers in the SSi team, that’s quite a possibility!

Hi @verity-davey! We’ve learnt a lot about biting off more than we can chew, over the years - we want to make sure that we stabilise our offering for LLMs and add a new approach for listening work (about which I’m very excited) and improve our cashflow before we take on the significant challenge of streamlining our approach for non-LLM languages.

But we’re still hoping to make significant headway with that in 2025 - when we do, our first concern will be the other Celtic languages, and then we’ll look to cast the net more widely via crowdsourcing, partnerships with governments and partnerships with language rescue projects. :slightly_smiling_face:

@rich - I had a report yesterday of an account being left logged in on a Chromebook (but the Chromebook being closed) and having jumped forward significantly when reopened (to the extent that the user has resorted to logging out completely at the end of each session). Just flagging it up in case it’s not already on your list!:heart:

Morning all, :sunny::sunglasses:

A quick update on where we are.

There is a new version of the App in both stores and the Web version has been updated.

This version addressea the sticky spaced repetition and repeating encouragements.

Could I just ask something? Is the Welsh worth doing? I already completed all 3 levels for both dialects. Is there new content in the Welsh course on the app or is it the original content with new bells and whistles?

I just tried out the Irish course but after Emily’s short introduction, it went straight into Aran telling me that the Spanish for ‘I want’ is ‘quiero’. There is an error message ‘Error fetching course, please try again’ when I first go into the Irish. And I have previously been trying out the Spanish course.

Hi @nigelhackneyb

That’s a very weird thing - I’d go for logging out and logging in - or restarting the App.

Could you let me know?

Thx
