I’m really enjoying SSi, its helping my word finding massively.
I like to listen to it on the app when i’m cycling to work but I have an issue where it keeps autopausing sporadically between phrases. Its a bit frustrating having to stop, take my phone out and pressing play again every few minutes. Its not an issue with buttons being pressed in my pocket as I lock the screen. Has anyone else come across this issue and found a work around?
Would be good to get a solution to this, I have tried every setting on the phone re sleeping and permissions and everything else but it makes the app very difficult to use, I mainly want to use it out and about but I can’t as I keep having to press play every 5 mins, never quite sure if it’s the natural pause to speak or the app has paused again. Very frustrating when walking or on the train. Makes using it in the car impossible too. Definitely the app as no probs with Audible or Spotify or Podcasts etc either downloaded or constant stream. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work.
I was having the same problem, and finding it very frustrating indeed - but, for me, it seems to have gone away with the latest update. Little comfort to you, I realise, but it might be a helpful data point for those trying to solve it.
This has proved extremely elusive as when we have looked for it, it seems to disappear - we believe it is Android o/s related. If you have this problem please could you share your Android and App version?
Thanks Rich, it’s sporadic / random too, sometimes it’ll go 20 mins most of the time 5 mins or so, sometimes 30 seconds. The only pattern I’ve noticed is that it seems to stop on “The Welsh for.” quite often (but not only, and not always)
Running an S24FE Android 14 OneUi 6.1 App Version 1.2.0, all permissions allowed, app pausing turned off if unused and all notifications allowed.
@rich Not sure if this is the same problem, or a related or unrelated one: where I mentioned somewhere before that the sound would stop, but the prompts would keep going, until you press Pause, and then Play, and the sound comes back? That one. I’ve just had it again, and realised that I perhaps didn’t say before that it seemed to happen consistently after certain prompts. So, in case it helps: if you can see what happens on the Portuguese course with the prompt ‘How she said that she can’t spend much time with the group,’ I think that’s one of the trigger phrases. (Android)
Wow, OK, that is really interesting…we will follow that up and see whether we can replicate it.
There is an element which seems connected to the Android version because neither Deborah nor I seem to experience it - which doesn’t help - Aran gets it and we’ve been trying a couple of things today to see if it makes a difference.
How on earth that fits with the above will be a wonder to discover.
There is a new build with new stuff in been approved over the weekend (Apple approved already - waiting for Android as usual).
We had creating a diagnostic build with a trap for this included on the to do list for next week but we will follow this up first.
Dk if you’ve been doing some prodding (or if I’d see anything yet, however busy you’ve been working on it) but I got a slightly different outcome last night to the “How do you not feel” prompt: it didn’t stop before the Portuguese this time, but it then stopped halfway through the first syllable of the next prompt. However, this looks like a different phenomenon, as the app was pizza-wheeling when I looked at it, not silently continuing.
We’ve just gone through an exercise where we have upgraded almost everything known to man, based upon Apple’s SDK version requirements and some Google version requirements also.
This has gone well - in the end - we have submitted a version to both stores, which has been accepted …so we are ready to rock n roll again…but it means that we have quite a few things that are all snagged up around it.
However, we are now in the process of creating a diagnostic build for this, which should kick into action on Monday. It will be fascinating to see what emerges.
For what it’s worth I’ve had this exact problem with my Galaxy S23 SM-S911B/DS, Android 14. I listen while walking the dog and three things seem to happen
I get the semi-regular auto-pausing as described above
It gets out of sync - normally just the phrases and on-screen printouts but a couple of days back it told me I’d got brown belt when I’m still on Blue/Black!
It suddenly jumps forward to the next “The Cymraeg for X is Y” segment. I often find myself having to rewind back so I can get the in-between practice.
Note this only happens with the screen locked, so I’ve taken to carefully placing my phone in my pocket unlocked and thats worked as a temporary measure (kills my battery though haha)
ETA: I tried clearing the cache (after logging out & force-stopping) and on a brief trial it hasn’t yet paused even once. When I get a chance later I’ll see how it goes in a longer trial.
Update: started happening again (in Portuguese) about 17 minutes in. Keeping the screen on with the app open it now seems to be averaging about once every six minutes - I think it was more frequent with the screen off.
Previous experience follows.
I’m now starting to wonder if it’s some kind of memory management issue/learner record size that’s causing the falls-silent-but-doesn’t-think-it’s-paused issue. For the past while I’ve just been doing Portuguese, and it hasn’t actually been too bad, but tonight I decided that now that there’s a whole Irish course that isn’t just a demo, I’d give it a go.
Big mistake.
When I tried to open the course it kept saying that there was a poor connection (even though I was standing next to the router) and wouldn’t open until I closed & force-stopped the app. Once I got started, I skipped ahead a few times, but then found that it was falling silent every 2-3 prompts (always after the prompt, before the first Irish speaker). Eventually, I gave up restarting it, and switched back to the Portuguese, only to find that was now just as bad. The thing is, I tend to do SSi while I’m doing something else - washing up (wet hands), kneading dough (sticky hands), or driving to work (eyes on the road). Having to pause & play every 2-3 prompts is literally unusably bad. If I were a new user it’d be a back away, uninstall, leave a more-in-sorrow one-star review kind of bad. Fortunately, I know it can work much better than this, and I know that you’re working to diagnose & solve it; but right now I simply can’t use the app
Interesting update (well, I think so): I tried changing to the Web app instead, to see if it was more reliable. It had great difficulty getting started (kept saying it was unable to download data due to a poor connection, despite being right next to the router I use to teach from home & my son uses for gaming). Once in, it, too, fell silent (but not actually paused) after 2:30. Which means that whatever is going on appears to be the same in the Android app and the Web app… which seems (from the outside & with little knowledge) a bit surprising, but potentially helpful (?) - tagging @rich
