More is coming on-line almost everyday now (there was a lull in importing for a while, but the process is underway again). Expect to see all of Level 2 available by the end of the month. I’m currently working through early Level 2 of Southern to get it to the same point as Northern (which it sounds like you are on), so maybe give it a day or so to see new content on Northern.
@denise-6 Yes, the standard subscription gives you access to all of our learning material, so you can choose what you want to use.
If you email admin@saysomethingin.com and request that the 6 Minutes emails be stopped as you want to just use AutoMagic, that can be done for you.
I was using the old materials, but finding it hard, so abandonned it, despite getting each week the email about next challenge, and paying each month.
I was then, very kind of the team, given access to the new Beta Automagic, and just loved it! However, a personal tragedy meant that my life was in pieces so I stopped again, for several months.
Today I decided to refresh, review, revise and then move forwards. However I am stuck at where I finished 6 or 8 months ago. I really need to whizz through the earlier bits again, but can find no way to do that. I have found it very disheartening today to think that 6 months ago I could do this, and now I cannot.
How can I refresh by starting again?
Here is the review that I did months ago. It may no longer be relevant, of course, as the team work through modifying things and tuning the whole set-up.
Having tried and abandoned the standard SSIW, I found it too depressing, just couldn’t keep up, listened and re-listened, started all over again and again, I have today tried the AutoMagic SSIW.
Overall verdict: very favourable.
Positives:
-
Catrin seems to talk more slowly, or is it just because I have done the first challenge so often?
-
Having the English on screen is very helpful. It saves putting the effort into trying to remember a long sentence "I am going to try to remember to practice speaking in Welsh", wow, what was it I need to say? So that is very good.
-
Having the Welsh on screen when Alan speaks. I am a firm believer in the dual input of ear and eye when learning a language, and this is the feature that I most appreciate. In particular it is good for noting the mutations after i and y. So 5 stars for this. ![]][][][]
-
The different progress levels that can be chosen may come into play more when I am not re-doing material I know well, but in theory it seems very good.
Not so sure . . .
- I think that it would be helpful if on the front page, or whatever you call it, it is made clear exactly what the system is.
An explanation of how it works, how choosing the ![]or ![]]etc. impacts on how the learning works.
And especially, I was expecting it to end, as it does after one challenge to then begin the second challenge, and I went on and on and on for 1h 25m before deciding that possibly it was up to me to stop, because otherwise it goes on forever, right up to the end.
So if that is so, again, learners need that explained to them. The learning material is not artificially cut up into lessons. You choose how long or short you want your learning session to be.
- Alan’s little brain infos started to grate a bit after a while. Sorry! N.B. a leftover from older version, at minute 35 of learning time on my screen he says You have learnt an enormous amount in only a quarter of an hour! You may need to cut that out.
Would have liked . . .

I would have liked what I have on my iPad when I am watching Netflix or any on-demand tv show - a twirly backward arrow to go back 20 seconds to listen again. Actually at this early stage I didn’t need it, having done it all so very often, but certainly I remember wishing you had that when I was staggering through the challenges before.
-
Possibly, under the box, on RH, something saying Learning time remaining at this level of progress . . .
That may be tricky to arrange, but as I was waiting for challenge 1 to end, I kept looking for it! A better explanation as I say above, that it is not cut up into learning sessions would help.
But as I said. Overall verdict: very favourable. Thank you to all the team.
This is my main point!
It would almost certainly be possible to ‘refresh’ as you call it - as an early Beta tester returning to pick up again (email admin@saysomethingin.com and explain your situation) - howeeveeeer…
One of truly weird things about the method is what has gone in, and that you don’t realise has gone in. The words and phrases are at different stages of acceptance in your head - some sort of internal pipeline - step by step - before just popping out of your mouth without thinking.
Automagic has been set up, to try to ‘help’ people work through the material in an optimal way - and weirdly the biggest single thing which slows progress is revisiting things too much.
The things that are revisited are going to work their way through anyway - they just need time to get there - and it stops the process from getting started on the new material (because old stuff is being recapped instead).
Granted, if you have had a long break, yours is not the regular situation but you might be surprised - after a period of getting back into it - how much you remember, just by carrying on.
Rich
Thank you, Rich, for your kind and encouraging post.
I am giving it a go!
(But it is hard…)
A refresh/back arrow would be good to help when you have to have a break. Again I really appreciate the ‘subtitles’ but as I do Automagic when walking the dog whipping my phone out of my pocket occasionally to see them isnt easy.
I know i have raised having a transcript and I can see that this is discouraged as it could interfere with the leaning method BUT i do wonder if a list of the english sentences covered would be as useful as a record of what has been covered and as a crib list for revision.
Thanks for your input, Denise - we think the best revision in all circumstances is to continue with new material with the old mixed in, which is why we don’t think a simple list of sentences would give extra value - but of course there’s nothing stopping you from taking your own notes (I’d just strongly recommend against it, as not being a good use of your time! ).
Helo, new poster here
I’ve been giving the AutoMagic free trial a tryout for 3, and then the additional extra; 7 days - diolch !
I’ve been a lurker on SSiW website and Forum since last Nov/Dec when I did the Mae Hen Wlad challenge and then the 1 Sentence week challenge and enjoyed both . I started DewiLingo in October 22 , currently doing the last couple of units, now thinking about what to do after this to continue the dysgu (i siarad) Cymraeg journey, leaning towards SSiW , the website, community and ethos seem very welcoming ,
I like AutoMagic but I’m wondering how it fits with the L1/L2 challenge route. I’ve managed about 12 hours so far and seem to be around L1 5-6 depending on what speed I’ve been using - I’ve just started the try 5 minutes ‘faster’ test so will see how that works, for the last 2-3 days of the trial. I’d hoped it may have taken me a bit further along the challenges, but now I know a little more about it can see that it might depend on how ‘fast’ it is. I did try a couple of the challenges on the website to compare and they seemed a lot faster and more difficult - the level 1 1st and 2nd - is it the same material ? I’ve looked at the vocab lists and it looks the same - I wondered if the trial version was perhaps a sample ( like the One Sentence challenge ) version.
Also, is AutoMagic intended as a companion to the challenges or a standalone - I like AutoMagic and would like to use it but wonder if the more structured 6Minute/6Month route is a better option.
How are people using it, or how was it intended to be used- would welcome some comments as an SSiW beginner.
One issue for me has been when I stop or pause I sometimes miss the last point. it would be useful to have a ‘back a minute’ function - I was interrupted and missed a key bit of information on ‘bo h’in ddiddorol’ (ironically!) so would have like to be able to skip back to the start of that segment to pick it up - I could do that with the challenges ? I do like Aran’s information /encouragement segments - gives a natural break and a target - are they every 15-20 minutes ?
Sorry to ask so many questions.
Go for it !
The material covered is the same, but it’s presented differently. In the Challenges, you have no control over the number of practice examples you get before new material is presented, apart from going back and repeating. AutoMagic allows you to adjust the setting to have more or fewer repetitions depending on how you feel your learning is going, and you can change the setting whenever you feel you need to. So, it’s not just a sample, but taking you through the main course material.
It can definitely be used as a standalone. It covers all the same material, so there is no need to use the Challenges at all. At the moment, you don’t automatically get an invitation to join the online SSiW Community Chat Slack group, but you’re entitled to do that with a paying subscription. Contact admin@saysomethingin.com and ask to be sent an invitation to join.
That’s currently being worked on by the Tech Development Team, so it shouldn’t be far off. It’s easy to get interrupted and miss something, so you’ll be able to do that.
I’ll check on the information videos for you
They start out about every 5-10 minutes, and there are around 50 of them at the moment, so they should give you a lot of useful information
We’ve still got a bit of fine tuning to do with AutoMagic, but I think it’s already at the point where it’s a better route than the Levels - if you set it to a more leisurely pace, it will take a little longer to finish the content, but even that probably won’t delay the amount of time until you’re getting into conversations (which should always be the main goal)
Just trying out the Automagic with the free trial - thanks for that! (and tried Spanish, which weirdly, was a lot harder than learning Cymraeg!)
I’ve done most of the Southern course, so I selected South Wales. I noticed some differences which I thought to be more Northern: this version used “angen”, as in “dw i dal angen” instead of “mae dal eisiau i fi”, as well as pronouncing “sut” with a s rather than sh sound.
The subtitles are helpful. I used to review the vocabulary after each lesson which helped me delineate the word (so many times I had the wrong consonant).
I do wish there’s a way to jump up to a higher level rather than starting from the bottom.
A marker to show where one is up to in the entire course would also be great (and help visualize progress).
Thanks very much for the feedback, Emilie - we’ve got a ‘skip’ function coming soon, and we’re working on a karate belt grading system to show progress, which we hope will be helpful
My Automagic seems to have gone down. Don’t know if it is a site glitch? Or if there’s an internet problem. I do remember seeing something about a free three days and a further 7 days if you did 30 minutes a day. But can’t seem to find that now or how to sign up for after the 7 days.
I must say though I’ve been using SSIW challenges since about 2016. It has always been intermittent and I’ve always got stuck around lesson three. I have now done over 6 hours with Automagic and have finally gotten into the level 6 challenge and it has been the easiest achievement yet. It just flows. I find the fact I can only go forward a blessing in disguise. I look forward to being significantly ahead for the Eisteddfod next summer.
It seems to be okay for me at the moment, so hopefully just a glitch - do let us know if you carry on having problems with it, though! Delighted that you’re finding it helpful so far
I’ll ask tech about the sign up process!
Any idea @aran & tech pobl, when Level 3 Gogledd will be incorporated into Automagic? No pressure (I’ve swapped to the non-text Challenges), but I do prefer my morning pot of tea with the Automagic.
