I know from school days, back in the dark ages, that the Cymraeg for ‘yes’ and ‘no’ often varies, and has something to do with the verb that follows. But I’m still confused by the versions used in challenge 16. Can anyone help?
Could you give some timecodes and say if it’s the Northern or Southern version? (so I can find the right ones quicker in order to help!)
14 mins 30 secs, Southern version.
The question here is in the present tense - Wyt ti isio darllen… / Do you want to read…? - and the “wyt ti”, the ‘you’ (singular/familiar) form of ‘bod’, so to answer “Yes (I do)”, you need the ‘I’ form of ‘bod’ which is “Ydw”.
The general rule is that the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to use usually echoes the verb and tense of the verb used in the question (In this example, the present tense of ‘bod’). There are exceptions, especially in the past tense and questions that don’t start with a verb, but those are actually easier to get to grips with than the ‘main rule’!
Hope that helps
Diolch yn fawr iawn!
