'y / yr' in placenames

Y Bala, Y Fenni, but plain Abertawe or Caerfyrddin (many more examples of the latter pair). Are there just a few placenames (more examples of exceptions please) which become ‘THE’ Bala or ‘THE’ Fenni? Also applies to countries…yr Alban but Lloegr (without ‘y’ before).
Dw i’n mynd i Gaerdydd. Dwi’n mynd i’r Bala. Diolch yn fawr am unrhyw help

There are certainly fewer that do have the definite article than don’t have it, but more than you’d think! As well as the ones you’ve mentioned, here are some more off the top off my head…
Y Felinheli, Y Barri, Yr Wyddgrug, Y Fflint, Y Drenewydd, Y Trallwng, Y Borth, Yr Eidal, Yr Almaen, Y Ffindir, Y Swistir, Yr Aifft

Y Llundain 'na

Y Rhyl, yr Wyddgrug and y Fflint… curious to know why it happens.

Diolch am yr enghreifftiau arall :+1:
