Welsh Word of the Day - We Learn Welsh

If you’re looking for a way to boost your Welsh vocabulary, to learn a few more words to combine with the structures you’re learning with SSiW, and vary what you can say, then there’s a new website being launched today by “We Learn Welsh” that could be just the thing!

Heather lives in West Wales, has learnt Welsh herself (including with SSiW), and is keen to support other Welsh learners in their journey, so she has started this initiative to present one new Welsh word each day.

If you to go Welsh Word of the Day you can subscribe for free to receive a daily email with a new word. There will be sample sentences, explanations of how it’s used, and audio pronunciation files, so worth a look!

Thanks for sharing, Deborah! If anyone here has any additional questions, I’m happy to answer them.

Hi Heather.

I’ve been enjoying the posts you’ve been doing on Reddit r/learnwelsh – I was the poster who enjoyed learning the name for hamster bochdew – ‘fat cheek’… I think your posts are interesting and nicely presented, thanks! I’ve subscribed to the daily email and look forward to reading it.

Just one thing – are there any plans to move away from Facebook (or at least provide alternative access to the material?

Given the toxicity of the company behind it (Meta and its founder Zuckerberg) and the recent allegations about their deliberate pirating of billions of items of copyright material, I suspect I’m not alone in wanting to have nothing whatsoever to do with the company. (“Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right”: Meta emails unsealed - Ars Technica)

But irrespective of that, good luck with the website!

Hi David

Thanks for your support!

Right now, I don’t see a practical alternative to Facebook, much as I’d love to leave the platform myself. The vast majority of our audience is there, and it remains the best way for us to reach new subscribers for our newsletter.

That said, we’re also on TikTok, and our ‘word of the day’ newsletter features much of the same content we share on social media.

There are quite a few Welsh learners and first language Welsh speakers on Mastodon. Although nothing like the size of Facebook, people do engage with posts there. I think you could get people interested.

I’d also recommend Mastodon, and Bluesky too.

What kind of numbers are we talking about? I have 21k followers on FB and a high percentage is very engaged.

Thanks, Heather. I appreciate it can be difficult to balance these things once they’ve been established.

Toot Cymru on Mastadon and Bluesky are both relatively newer platforms, so they’re not going to be anywhere near as many followers there as on Facebook, but both are far more ethical.

Followers example (just going with something I know is on all 3)
Nation Cymru: 40k on Facebook, 5.1k on Bluesky, 3.7k on Toot Cymru

I’ll look into them both. Thanks for the information!

I’ve joined both platforms but unfortunately, Toot Cymru doesn’t allow me to post videos and Bluesky has a 60 second limit. (All our reels are 90 seconds.) I can post our infographics though.

It’s possible to share YouTube videos to Toot Cymru, but I must admit I’ve never tried to post any other sort.
I’ll look out for your infographics and boost them when I see them

One thing to bear in mind with Bluesky is that engagement there is very high, so even if your absolute numbers are low, proportionally more people will see your posts (because there’s no algorithm to hide them) and more will engage with them.

You can avoid the 60s video limit by embedding YouTube videos instead.

Thanks. I don’t actually upload to YouTube anymore since I found that engagement there was very low. I think I’ll stick with the infographics! Is there any way to upload videos to this forum?

The only way to share videos here is to put a link one on hosted elsewhere, e.g. YouTube or Flickr. That applies to other sites too, not just here. Even if you’re not getting much engagement on YouTube, it’s useful for hosting videos so you can link to them from other places.

Heather, I love it. So well put together in bitesize chunks. Great effort -Thanks

I wonder if you could help? I am really struggling with, would/should/could and the n’ts!

I like how SSIW doesn’t just encourage lists to learn, but I think a list may help me, just at the moment.

Do you have anything or know where I might find this information.

Diolch, Victoria

Here are some good tables for would/should/could, but they’re not exhaustive (i.e. you will hear other versions in speech too, such as contracted versions)

Would - Byddwn I - I Would - AmeriCymru | americymru.net
Should - Croeseiriau Cymraeg Part 4.3 (Crossword 4.4) - Dylwn I - I Should - AmeriCymru | americymru.net
Could - Gallwn - Could - AmeriCymru | americymru.net
