Welsh language and Welsh-themed quizzes on parallel.cymru

Hey all,

In my constant quest to make parallel.cymru an interesting portal for Welsh language and culture, I’m starting quizzes on there. I’m created a way to make quizzes in Welsh, with an option to hover a button over to get an English version of the question. It also reveals the reason for an answer after the user makes their choice, so it is educational. They work well on mobiles too. A sample quiz is here: https://parallel.cymru/?p=7486.

I’m providing the platform, but I’m not creative enough to write lots of fun quizzes, so I’d like to make it a community enterprise and publish quizzes that others have written. Full credit would be given in the quiz introduction to the person who has written it. There’s lots of things that coud be done- quizzes about grammar, the language, Welsh history, music…

If anyone is interested in putting something together, drop me a line on parallel.cymru@gmail.com or make some suggestions here

Before I commit , a couple of questions…

Would it be just 4 questions per quiz (or is that just the sample number)?

How regularly would you need them? / How many sets of questions would you need at a time?

Are there any character limits for the questions and/or answers?

Thanks Sharon… interrogating the quizmaster!
That first quiz was just a sampler really to show what it can do. I’ve put a second one live now: https://parallel.cymru/?p=7607

  • There can be as much questions as the quiz creator wants.
  • One of the delights of being a digitial publisher is that I don’t have publication dates, so people can send content through whenever they have had the time and mindset to create them. No mega commitment is needed!
  • If someone wanted to do a one off quiz- great, if someone wanted to a series- also great. Each quiz should have 5 or so questions to make it interesting, but a follow up could be added later, or an easier/more challenging version of the same theme.
  • I’m not aware of a character limit… you are thinking of some sort of Llanfairpwll… question??

haha, no, it’s just that when I’ve done questions for a quiz show on S4C, there has been a character limit on the display software, so I didn’t know if the format/software you use would have one too.

So basically you’d need a set of questions in Welsh with the English translation, a set of possible answers in Welsh, and comments for each answer (right or wrong) in Welsh, yes?

That’s absolutely correct Sharon- although just one comment for each question, not for each answer. The comment is displayed whatever answer option is chosen.

It sounds like you are an expert in quiz preparation?

I wouldn’t go as far as to say expert, but I am a researcher, so googling for trivia suits me fine!

I’ll have a bash at some sets this weekend

I have a question in mind, but do not yet have all necessary data. In English it is:-
Based on population, which UK Country has done best in the Commonwealth Games?
The answer, so far is :-
(based on medal number/population in millions)
Cymru (Wales) 7.7
Yr Alban (Scotland) 6.61
Lloegr (England) 1.51
Gogledd Iwerddon (NI) 1.1
Anyone wanting to use this when the final totals are known, be my guest!

Perffaith, diolch Sharon, edrych ymlaen at beth byddi di’n creu!

Hello
I have received a copy of a quiz from Nia Llewellyn of Cymdeithas yr Iaith. There are 11 sections each with 10 questions. It has apparently been designed for people learning Welsh as an additional language. It is available from their website.

Thanks @llanddinol, that’s good to know. I can’t find it on their website, but I will give Nia a ping.

I’ve sent you some I did today via the email address you posted above - hope they’re what you’re looking for (I won’t be offended if you don’t use them or want to ‘tweak’ them! ;-))

Diolch Sharon! I’ve received, and they are great thanks. I can see that you have put time and thought into composing them. I’ll lay the first one out for you to check tomorrow
