The English says wanted but welsh translation is for wants. I’m a bit confused.

In Welsh, once you have introduced the past tense, you usually change back to present for details, such as what people said or did. That’s because it was the present tense at the time. So. its actually easier than English.
It’s easier to follow if you are talking about yourself without the word “that”. So -
I said “I want”.
