Topic of the Month

This is an experiment in response to an observation that the forum isn’t as lively as it has been in the past, and I think part of that is the lack of threads talking about things that aren’t directly about the app or the SSi method.

So the idea is to pin a post each month with a topic that everyone is welcome to reply to with their our thoughts, experiences and observations, just riff on what others have said or even just go completely off topic.

Hopefully this will make people feel like they know other members a little better and help strengthen the community.

As always, please be polite and respectful of others. And feel free to start your own posts if you want.

So for November:

Lost In Translation - your experiences of saying one thing and hearing something completely different.

Mine comes from a bootcamp many years ago when I was in the supermarket in Pwllheli. Needing the toilet I asked a member of staff “Ble mae’r toiledau?” where upon I was shown to the television section.

I always say tŷ bach now.

So what’s yours? Have you been reading about tatŵs thinking it was about potatoes or said you like poison flowers instead of spring flowers?

Rockstar

Let me be the first to jump in with what I’m expecting will be a popular variant for this one…

Me, many many years ago, in a pub in Porthmadog, with an attractive woman I’d just met. Still in the stage of speaking very slowly and sometimes getting a bit stuck.

Me: Dwi rili isio trio rhyw… beth arall tro nesaf.

Her: laughter

Me: ??

Her: You’re probably going to want to practise not pausing in the middle of the word rhywbeth.

 :joy:

Years and years ago, I was at a beginners course at Canolfan Cymru Llundain and the tutor had us all sing “Old Macdonald Had a Farm” in Welsh.

When it came to me, I decided that Old Macdonald had a duck. Unfortunately, I didn’t say duck, hwyaden, I said hwren.

There was quite a bit of laughter, probably also because I had absolutely no idea what I’d said. :joy:

Genius. I think I’ll always hear that in Old Macdonald from now on
