It is about 6 months old but still very sad to read and realize this is still very much the case for much of Wales. I’m sure it has not changed since the article has been written. I do wonder how Gwynedd, Ynys Môn and Caerdydd compare to “West Wales and the Valleys”, which seems a very lumpen-region.

The words of Douglas Carswell gave me a chuckle. He sounded like a kipper even before his defection.

I would wager that the relative poverty between Wales and East Europe is more indicative of the improvement of the former Soviet subjects than anything else. As for Wales (and Cornwall): when one country conquers another, who is surprised that the victor is enriched and the subjugated “foreigners” are impoverished?
