There used to be a bunch of free lessons to start you off. Where did they go? The only thing that comes up under ‘Learn’ is the Automagic app which is no use to me 'cos I don’t have a mobile phone so can’t download it.

Several years ago, you could download 15, I think, free lessons. That was reduced to a couple three or four years ago, I think. There’s still a free trial with the new Automagic system, but I’m not sure how long it lasts.

You can still use Automagic on a web browser, so you don’t need a mobile phone or tablet. There’s a link to it on the download page: https://www.saysomethingin.com/en/saysomethingin-app/. Click on the big black ‘Web App’ button.

HTH

As @David_B said, but just adding some details about the trial - the there is no time limit, so you can just log in and start using it for free. :slightly_smiling_face:

At some point you’ll reach the end of the free content, which means that you can keep learning the things that have already been introduced, but it won’t introduce any more until you subscribe.

and here’s the link to the web browser version of the new app: https://app.saysomethingin.com/

I think you can still use and download the Old Course for free, or maybe just the first level of it.
I have a subscription so everything is visible to me. Still, if clicking “Learn” only gets you to AutoMagic that doesn’t seem right. I had something similar once and an admin had to tweak some settings in my account. Maybe that’s what you need, and then you’ll be able to see the challenges/lessons etcetera?

Thanks everyone. That’s very helpful. I did sign up to try the AutoMagic when it first came out but didn’t get round to it before the trial expired (or so I thought). I also stumbled across the old courses somehow. I shall try it again,

ps. I didn’t respond sooner as I don’t remember seeing a notice that you’d all replied. Maybe I’m getting old …

A good few years ago, the first courses were free - both the ones with Aran and Iestyn. A lot more than 15 lessons though. You then paid to get the further courses. How long ago are you thinking of? [It was damned good - I’d always recommend SSiW to anybody learning Welsh because of this. Obviously it wasn’t the economic model which was considered viable, unfortunately.]

Hya Owain, I found them. They’re still there and there are 26 free lessons. However, I’ve now got some spare cash so I’ve subscribed to use Auto Magic which I find very slow. I actually prefer the Challenges which are really giving me a workout. I’m still on the free level 1 but now have access to the other levels too (when I get there). (I know ‘Hya’ is not true cymric but it’s what we used to yell at each other when I was a kid in Cardiff).

Are you using the AutoMagic prototype - the one with automagic.saysomethingin.com at the top, and only available in a web browser version?

Or are you using the latest SaySomethingin mobile app, which has app.saysomethingin.com as the web browser version?

There are some updates coming through very soon for the new app which will make a big difference to the performance. Hopefully that will help you.

I don’t use/have a mobile phone so I guess I’m using the first one. It’s okay though I find the old challenges suit me down to the ground. I’m up to Level 1, Challenge 21 - which is about my right level at the moment. My only problem now is trying to speak Cymraeg to someone other than the Ravens.

@DavidWilsonsteer are you interested in joining in any of the online sessions? I see that you don’t have a membership in the SSiW Community Chat Slack group yet, and you’re entitled to one as a paying subscriber, so I’ve sent you an invitation.

The timetable may not totally suit you in Australia, but there is an Australia chat group that you could join. Do you know about that? Its in the open Welsh Speaking Practice Slack group so I’ve sent you an invitation to that as well.

(Love those Australian ravens! They always make me laugh with the raucous sound they make.)
