Staying in the same tense

On some parts of the course we are taught that in welsh we stay in the same tense but I’m a bit confused by this example where I keep saying ‘oedd’ and not ‘bod’.

’ I said that it had finished’
‘Wedais I bod e wedi cwpla’

I keeping saying ‘oedd e wedi cwpla’ for this construct

Can someone explain why it’s a bod and not an oedd?

Thanks

Andrew

Because you need a ‘that’, and bod is the ‘that’ here.
