Welsh Learners invited to special Christmas service at Bangor Cathedral
Saint Deiniol’s Cathedral in Bangor is hosting a special Christmas service created specifically for Welsh learners.
The service, called Duw a Dysgwyr ‘Dolig, is adapted from a traditional Eucharist and is conducted at a slower pace. Vocabulary and pronunciation guides for key words are also provided. The short service will include Christmas carols in Welsh with readings and a brief sermon. The initiative aims to help Welsh learners participate more fully in worship across the diocese. While the service is specially adapted for learners, fluent Welsh speakers are also welcome to attend.
Duw a Dysgwyr is a monthly Eucharist service led by the Diocese of Bangor as part of their commitment to promote the Welsh language in its churches. Duw a Dywgwyr launched in June 2024 and has been popular with Welsh learners across the diocese.
Organiser Elin Owen, Welsh Language Enabler at the Diocese of Bangor, says "We’re excited to be hosting our first ever Christmas Eucharist service for learners. This will be a great addition to the festive celebrations for learners of all levels!
“Making Welsh-language worship accessible to learners at all levels is vital for keeping our language and traditions alive. Whether someone is just beginning their Welsh language journey or building their confidence, they’ll find a warm Christmas welcome at Duw a Dysgwyr ‘Dolig."
Following the service, attendees are invited to a Christmas buffet where they can practice their Welsh with fellow learners in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, supported by Menter Iaith Bangor.
The Duw a Dysgwyr 'Dolig service takes place on Monday 16 December at 12:30pm.
