Small?

Can anyone throw some light on the difference between bach, tipyn, and, when I was growing up in Merthyr Tydfil, we used “twt”?

twt for ‘small’ is definitely more common in the Valleys although it is used occasionally elsewhere. One of it’s given meanings is ‘compact’ (along with tidy, neat, dainty, orderly, smart!), so that’s where the ‘small’ comes in.
bach is the most general and common word for small / little and will be understood everywhere.
tipyn is small as in quantity - a little bit / a small piece.
