Short break in Aberystwyth

Shw mae!

I’m spending a few days in Aberystwyth next week, does anyone know of anywhere good to stay (read: pleasant, modest and affordable) where they are happy to speak Welsh to learners? Also good pubs and cafes where Welsh is spoken and they don’t mind learners?

I’ve seen a couple of recommendations for pubs and cafes but advice on places to stay where Welsh is spoken would be great! Thanks

Hello,
I would recommend GwesTY in South Road. It’s one of the few independent ones I’ve seen and the only with Welsh speaking owners who are happy to speak and hear Welsh spoken.

Depending on what time you arrive you might meet them right away or just self-check in, but there’s always chances to have a chat especially during breakfast.

Other details:
Best price booking directly from them. It’s easy to walk from there to the center and the promenade.
It’s small and often full so better ask a bit in advance to check availability.
Not all rooms have ensuite bathroom but it’s always clean and tidy, the windows were new and well insulated (unlike some in a similar price range right on the promenade, with a very nice view but some not so well kept and with a a freezing wind from the sea straight inside from the old windows!

I’ll think about caffi and pubs - but in any case, I’d say where ever you go, don’t worry:
just try and speak Welsh! I just tried every chance I got, since the first time I went there and always found very friendly people, and had nice chats - worst that can happen is that they can’t speak Welsh!

p.s. not to be confused with Gwesty Cymru, that’s a different one and I don’t know anything about it.
