She said? or She said?

Hi

Are these two interchangeable or are there rules to which I should use on over the other?
Oedd hi yn dweud…
Fe ddywedodd hi…

Hi Nadip
Oedd hi’n dweud = She was saying.

So no rules really, just a different way of putting it.

She was saying …

She said …

(“Naeth hi ddweud” = also “she said”)
There’s also “meddai hi” but I think you use that when quoting.

Hi Both, thank you!
Its the small things like this that give me confidence. Welsh seems to be more often stretchier that I otherwise assume.

“Stretchier”. What a great way of putting it!

The ‘fe ddywedodd hi’ is just the same as ‘roedd hi’n ddweud’ in the same way as ‘fe aeth hi’ and ‘roedd hi’n mynd’ (she was going), same tense…The former is known as the ‘short form’ as the brilliant Welcome to Welsh by Heini Gruffudd puts it.

Hi @david-smith, it’s a wee bit different to that I’m afraid. You seem to be mixing your preterite and your imperfect.

“Fe aeth hi” = she went.
“Roedd hi’n mynd” = she was going.

Point taken. Opportunities to use the Welsh I learned in the 1990s are pretty much non existent these days.
