I know a goldfinch as nico (plural nicos) & a blackbird as aderyn du (plural adar duon), but I’ve also heard people refer to a blackbird as mwyalchen (plural mwyalch)
Diolch, John!
I know nico for goldfinch and both aderyn du and mwyalchen for blackbird. That’s in the south of Gwynedd, in case the names are regional.
Diolch, Margaret!
Nico and aderyn du for me, but also familiar with mwyalchen from reading.
We keep Llyfr Natur Iolo on the shelf by the kitchen window, which helpfully gives Welsh, English and Latin names for a wide range of wildlife (along with identification photos and short descriptions for each), so it’s often Iolo’s suggestion that I will use! https://palasprint.com/siopa/product_info.php?products_id=678&language=en
Nico and aderyn du for me too, and also familiar with mwyalchen.
Thanks! I shall put Iolo’s book on my Christmas list!
Thanks! This is very helpful!
