Questions and request for support; new Southern Course 6-9

Shwmae Pawb,

Here I am again  I have now completed the New Southern Course lessons 6,7,8, and 9 and have some more questions.

Would you be willing to answer them for me? If so, please see below. I hope the questions are clear. I had used bold and cursive letters in my original document and I see that they dont work here. If you would like my original word doc please send me a private message and I’ll mail it through.

warm wishes,

Elkie

Spelling: Is this what I am hearing?
Dw i’n mynd i ymarfer siared bo bwythnos = I am going to practise speaking every week.

Grammar: Are both of these correct? i.e. with or without ‘wyt’? (My brain is screaming ‘ wyt’ is in there and I don’t hear it so am guessing the pattern in my brain is inaccurate  )
Hoffwn i wybod beth (wyt) t’in moyn.

Shwmae Elkie. I haven’t done the new Course 1 yet, but I’ll give them a go for you:

LESSON 6:

Spelling: Dw i ddim yn swir ond mae isie i ti stopo OR
Dw i ddim yn swr ond mae isie i ti stopio. ?
’Stopio’ is the spelling, but often in the South, words that end in ‘-io’ often drop the ‘i’ when pronounced: e.g. gweithio = gweitho, cinio = cino. Also, swr is spelt siŵr.

Spelling: Dw i ddim yn swr os gallu i cofio unrhyw beth arall OR
Dw iddim yn swr os galla i cofio unrhywbeth arall
A bit of both! Dw i ddim yn siŵr os galla i gofio unrhyw beth arall.

Mutation: 26.51 : A year – Y flwyddyn – What is the soft mutation?
Dw i wedi dysgu am biti blwyddyn nawr. (for about a year)
As far as I know, flwyddyn is the soft mutation of blwyddyn.

LESSON 7:

Spelling: 00.45: Dweud est ti??? You said….
Dwedaist ti

Spelling: 08.32: Pa mor hir : How long
Looks fine to me.

What am I hearing? Approx. 13.00: Ble wyt in moyn i wneud e? gwneud e? (Where do you want to do it?)
’Ble wyt ti’n moyn ei wneud e?’ would be my guess.

LESSON 8:

Spelling: 00.45: Gall e ti? Galleti? = You could
Gallet ti

Spelling: 02.55: Alle ti ddweud? = Could you say
Allet ti ddweud

LESSON 9:

Approx.05.10: grammer: To understand what you said - Are both of these answers correct?: Deall beth dwedaist ti / Deall beth wnest ti ddweud
Yes, you could use either.

Spelling: 25.20: De helpu di?? (To help you)
dy helpu di

Spelling: Par mor hir wedi bod yn dysgu? (How long have you been learning?)
** Pa mor hir wyt ti wedi bod yn dysgu?**

Grammar: Wnest ti ddechrau wythnos (y) nol? - With or without the ‘y’?
’yn ôl’ is the full phrase, but this is often squashed in speech.

Grammar: Is my understanding correct that:
I was trying: On i’n trio cofio rhywbeth. (Past Simple Continuous)
I have been trying = Dw i wedi bod yn trio. (Present Perfect Continuous)
I tried = Wnes i drio. (Past Simple)
(PS: Actually grammar is not my thing at all having had Nuffield French and Latin  A girlfriend has helped me with these terms to support me in sorting things out  )
Grammar is not my thing either, but they sound good to me!

Spelling: Is this what I am hearing?
Dw i’n mynd i ymarfer siared bo bwythnos = I am going to practise speaking every week.
Dw i’n mynd i ymarfer siarad bob wythnos.

The ‘wyt’ often gets dropped in speech. It’s there in spirit, though! And in writing, I’m guessing.

Hope all of that helped rather than confused further!

Great stuff, Jon, diolch o galon…:seren:

Elkie, it’d probably be a bit easier all round if you could bring your questions in slightly smaller bunches! Sometimes, the answers will turn into discussions, and it’ll be easier for you (and everyone else!) to follow if they’re not mixed up in large groups of other queries…

Diolch yn fawr iawn, Jon!

One thing to add to Jon’s complete and brilliant post…

Lesson 7 - Ble wyt in moyn i wneud e? gwneud e?

Jon is correct to say the “formal” moyn ei wneud e, but in real life, you will hear “…moyn gwneud e.” to “…moyn ei wneud e”, and “…moyn wneud e”, from different people, sometimes from the same person, sometimes even in the same sentence, so don;t be too precise about it in speech. Go for “ei wneud e” in formal writing, but anything goes in informal.

In other words - it’s your language, you choose!

HI Jon, Aran and Iestyn,

Thank you so much for this support. I am really grateful as it gives me clarity, helping me to read and write, which are important skills for me on my Welsh journey.

Aran - many thanks for your suggestion of bringing the questions in smaller bunches  I was trying to be efficient - and can really get that per lesson might be easier for others to read and respond to. So…Will do

Am going to download the new lessons 10 and 11 now  Many thanks Cat and Iestyn!

Warm wishes,

Elkie

Diolch, Elkie…
