The English is
The old man had better try…
My problem is, I cannot understand the Welsh answer
Is ‘had better’, the same as ‘he’ d better’ in Welsh: Well iddo Fe?

Yes it is…in terms of the English - I had the same problem with 'd in my own language - I’d (
) never really thought about what I was saying before! 
So in terms of the Welsh you drop the ‘he’ and put in ‘the Old man’…
