If you could re-live one memorable holiday, which holiday would that be and why?

A bit corny really, but it’s true. We had our first holiday in Wales as a family in 2006 near Llanystumdwy. This holiday re-kindled my childhood love of Wales, and ultimately led to me leaving the RAF, learning Welsh and buying a small caravan which is permanently sited near Aberdaron so that we can spend as much time as possible in Wales. The ultimate aim to move to Aberdaron or close by.

Um. Had a great month in New Zealand once - swam with dolphins. Maybe that one. Or a fortnight in Thailand with Catrin again… Or a family holiday to Lake Como when I was about 6, or to the Schwarzwald about the same time, when we camped among the pine trees, in the magical time before I knew that fathers could just up and leave you. Yeah, probably have to go with that one, because there’s still a fighting chance I can do New Zealand and Thailand again one of these years…

If your goal is to become fluent in Cymraeg, what one thing are you looking forward to being able do when you get there?

Not my goal, but there is clearly a need for someone fluent to add a translation into Welsh to this list:

“Languages into which Georges Perec’s lipogrammatic La Disparition has been translated while preserving the constraint: German (Anton Voyls’ Fortgang); English (A Void, Vanish’d!, A Vanishing); Italian (La scomparsa); Spanish (El secuestro, no ‘a’); Dutch (‘t Manco); Swedish (Försvinna); Turkish (Kayboluş); Russian (Исчезание, no ‘o’); Japanese (En-metsu).”

So that would be without using the letter “a”. Working title: “Y Diffyg”?

1990, walking the Negev Desert with a 19 year old American greek orthodox nun who was looking for a place to build her convent. Why? Because nothing was impossible that year.

Now that sounds like a book that needs to be written!
