Proper form of "I Cant"

It just goes to show how different hwntw and gog Welsh can be from time to time though, doesn’t it?

Sa i’n gallu gweud vs. Fedra i ddim deud

It’s also interesting (I think!) that gogs use both gallu and medru - I noticed Gareth the monkey (Caernarfon) said (in the Yws Gwynedd interview):

Fedrwn ni ganu jingl?
Can we sing a jingle?

while in the Elin Fflur interview he said at one point

Allith rhywun nôl ffôn Elin?
Can someone fetch Elin’s phone?

Most intriguing…

Can’t wait for that National Corpus to become available … it’s going to be fascinating following up on these points!

I learned ‘gallu’ but never got the hang of ‘ffili’, so would tend to say ‘alla a i ddim’. But now I’m using ‘methiant’ and so forth in more formal work, ‘methu’ feels more natural.

Orang Utan

Or to translate from Malay - “Dyn y Goedwig” / “Man of the Forest” (give or take a dropped H)

alla i ddim is fine as well , course - but methu or ffili is very common as an alternative

Ŵps! :open_mouth:
