Poor Connection Error (Website & Android App)

Hi,

I thought I’d return to doing some speaking practice (I had Covid & laryngitis before Xmas & was using the Automagic website on my Kindle but it looks like that’s been retired).

Trying to use the both the website for the app on my tablet and Android app on my phone, both just hang with a “Poor Connection - Course material or progress records could not be downloaded”

I’m logged in fine & trying to access South Welsh.

Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know, and sorry for the headaches! Automagic has been wobbly for a while now, and we’re hoping to close it down before too much longer - I’m seeing everything okay at the moment, but I’m on a fairly new chromebook - I’ll flag this up for @Deborah-SSi and @Kinetic to try and figure it out - but of course they’re not meant to be working at the weekends, so it might be Monday before we can solve it for you.

Thanks very much for such a swift reply. I went back to the tab & looked as you answered & it fleetingly sprang into life on the webpage at White Belt level but then disappeared & is now back to the poor connection error pop-up.

I mainly wanted to alert you of the fault in case it affects lots of people. I’ll mess around with practicing with other stuff & look forward to hearing any updates from you all when you manage to investigate.

UPDATE 13:58 - I can get the app to work just on my phone’s website (Chrome) & I’m in on the Blue-Black level there, which seems good. So I can use something, thanks. The Kindle website & Android app still have the fault.

(AutoMagic says my session has expired & will redirect me to the logon screen. But that’s fair enough, you can’t keep everything running if you’re trying to replace it with other improved options. I was quite far in with this & had progressed through various levels - maybe 23 hours? but still getting lots of new content. I don’t know if the new app retains that progress or you just have to start again / skip through until you reach a level you want to work from.)

Have a good weekend / Mwynheuwch y penwythnos.

Really appreciate the extra detail in there, diolch! And yes, we’re always really grateful to hear about things not working, in case it’s a serious outage.

It does sound as though navigating the belts in the new app is going to be the best way forward - there are also behind the scenes improvements in there which are a step forwards from Automagic (and more coming soon in our current test app) :slightly_smiling_face:

We’ve had the occasional report of that Poor Connection error, but not for some time now. It has usually been fixed by a simple uninstall and reinstall of the app. Have you tried that?

That AutoMagic error showing Session Expired has been rectified, but it can still be lurking in your cookies, so if you want to use it, you need to delete the cookies for saysomethingin.com from the browser you’re using. If you’re not sure how, just search for ‘delete cookies for specific website’ for your particular browser and follow those instructions. See if that helps.

Thanks for that. I’m now able to use something on each device & it’s giving me my current progress:

  1. I can get both AutoMagic & the regular App working in my web browser on the PC (Chrome).

  2. I deleted & reinstalled the Android App on my mobile phone & that works now, thanks.Hopefully I still have access to all the audio I originally downloaded to listen to offline. It’s not possible to get either AutoMagic or the App to work in the web browser or private tabs, as on a mobile phone it isn’t possible to do a site-specific deletion of cookies (I can delete all my browser data & then I’ll have to spend ages re-logging into other sites so I only do this when absolutely necessary in case I need to be logged in somewhere urgently, such as when not at home near the PC.)

  3. With the Kindle, there is no App available for it, so you can only use the website (Kindle’s browser is SIlk, there is no alternative). Like the mobile phone, it’s not possible to do site-specific cookie deletion & is a very time-consuming process to have to re-logon to numerous sites with repercussions if you forget something crucial, so I cannot do that. But you can log onto the website in a private tab to gain access to the App, just not AutoMagic.

(From what I read, iPhones & iPads can’t delete individual site cookies with Chrome either. I don’t know about other, less popular browsers.)

Thanks very much for your help.

If you need the Challenges audio files, they’re all still available through the website. Just click on ‘Learn’ above, then Learn again and Classic Challenges, and you’ll be able to download any that you need to from there.
