I was doing a bit of practicing with our group and used “onibai” = unless in a sentence, and someone asked do you need to use “bod” after it?

Yes, when it’s used to mean ‘unless’, you need a bod after it.
(you will see/hear it used with an ‘am’ after it, but in this case it doesn’t mean ‘unless’, it means “if it were not for”)
