Old course 1 (Vocab 1 32:00)

Hi, Can someone please help me understand what sounds like “wnaeth y saith ci” for “the 7 dogs opened”. I had assumed the verb would take the plural, but it sounds like the singular. Many thanks Raymond

You are hearing correctly (although you missing the main verb agor “to open”):
Wnaeth y saith ci agor y drws. - The seven dogs opened the door. (Literally “did open”)
Welsh functions a bit differently than English, and the plural form for 3rd person is only ever used with the pronoun nhw. If the subject is in any way named or specified, you use the “singular” 3rd person, even if the entity is technically plural.
So you’d get Wnaethon nhw agor y drws? for Did they open the door, because here we have the personal pronoun.

Many thanks. That I did not know, but you have explained it perfectly. I don’t think this was mentioned in the previous exercises which seems strange, because all other grammatical rules have been highlighted well.Ah well, thanks again. Raymond
