Began the course o Monday evening, repeatd again today(x2 30 minute sessions), whilst listening and repeating the phrases everything is fine, my problem is within 10minutes i,ve forgotten just about everything.I simply cannot recall any of the phrases! Wednesday tomorrow and i have not started part 2 yet. Feeling a tad concerned…Help!!
Hi Ian. They all get repeated intervals throughout the course. So, after a few challenges they will have sunken in.
Let me just check here - when you say ‘listening and repeating the phrases’ - do you mean that you’re listening to the English, listening to the Welsh and then repeating the Welsh?
Or do you mean that you’re listening to the English, saying the phrase in Welsh, and then hearing it in Welsh?
Keep on going. It is amazing how you can suddenly find yourself saying the sentences back in Welsh as you progress through the levels. The content gets repeated and built on as you go through the levels, so it’s not necessary to be word perfect before moving onto the next challenge. Having said that, some of us do need to do repartitions, but you may not be one of them. I was very unsure at first, but starting with SSi has been an exciting opportunity to learn about how I learn. If you do go on to find that you need to do reparations there are some useful threads on here with suggestions on how to do that in blocks.
Hi Aran, i listen to the english, i then speak it out in welsh then listen again to the two welsh. I seem fine at repeating but if i try to repeat the phrases after i have finished my ‘session’ i.e without listening to the lesson,i then find i cannot recall the phrases.
Okay, that’s great - because that’s not repeating, that’s translating into the target language…
The act of translating a prompt is subtly different from the act of thinking of and producing freely in the target language. You can practise for the latter by making a note in English of the words you’ve been introduced to, putting them on flashcards, and then making up a sentence in Welsh that includes the single prompt word in English…
But also… don’t worry too much about this. If you put it off until you’ve acquired a lot more Welsh, you can solve the free production issue by putting yourself in situations where you have to try and communicate in Welsh without any English…
