Following Aran’s request in week 22 of SSiW, I am reaching out to fellow Welsh learners. I live in a yoga/ meditation retreat centre midway between LLandovery and Llandeilo. No-one else here is interested in learning Welsh, and although I have Welsh speaking friends elsewhere in Wales, I only get to see them periodically. Hence looking for such learners in this area of north east Carmarthenshire. Fingers crossed, Chris
I’m sure there are lots of Welsh speakers in that area! I’ll pop a note in this week’s newsletter and see if we can find some ![]()
Thanks Deborah, and lets see what Life offers in response, with gratitude Chris
Hi Chris. My name’s Ann. I live in Llandovery and would like to get some more opportunities to practice.
Hi Ann, thanks, and it would be great to meet up and discuss our levels of Welsh experience and whether we can help each other deepen the learning. I am in Llandovery on Monday afternoon, or we could look at another date (afternoons/ early evenings currently best for me), or ‘meet’ each other on zoom first. Just let me know what suits you. My email is krishnapremananda@gmail.com if its easier to connect directly.
Thought I’d resurrect this thread rather than start a new one, hope that is ok? Please redirect if not.
I’m on my travels again and this time I’ve brought my dad who’s (re)learning Welsh.
We’ve spent the last couple of days in Llandovery / Llandeilo and tried to use Welsh where possible, so thought I’d detail that here;
Llandovery
Somewhat limited but;
The White Hall Pub
The barman in The White Hall had a bit of a conversation with us. His Welsh was definitely better than he thought. Beer was also great (real ale)!
Tudor Cafe
Menus were bilingual, and again a lady who wasn’t confident in her Welsh spoke perfectly well and allowed my dad to order something in Welsh for the first time ever. This meant a lot to him and triggered her to speak a bit more. There was also a small kid running around singing the rainbow song (red and yellow and pink and green…) in Welsh. Was nice all round.
Llandeilo
Yr Hen Vic
Got absolutely soaked on the way to this pub but totally worth it. Lovely staff, at least 1 of which was first language, and another was fluent. They were very happy to talk to us extensively, again gave my dad a good opportunity to use Welsh in a real situation (it was his round!). Food was good pub grub with an extensive vegan menu too. Good real ale available!
Salutation Inn
Another pub 30 seconds from Yr Hen Vic. Barmaid served us in Welsh and again, very pleasant and humoured us with a bit of conversation. Again, good pint of real ale!
Got some suggestions of cafes to try tomorrow, will report back if I find anywhere else to suggest.
Incidentally @chris-129 I think we were on the same bwtcamp a couple of years ago. Hope you a well and still learning Welsh.
Very useful information @charlie-o and great to hear that your dad is off to a good start using his Welsh! ![]()
Spent a bit more time in Llandeilo today;
Yr Hen Gwrt
Bookshop, gift shop and heritage centre. Welsh language featuring heavily. Fluent Welsh speaker behind the till
Diod
Lovely cafe with Welsh language staff. If you start in Welsh they’ll make sure that you get the Welsh speaking staff.
The Gwili Cafe
Didn’t try this one but was advised that the staff speak Welsh here
The Little Welsh Dresser
Really lovely gift shop. The guy running it is a learner but speaks pretty well, definitely enough to serve customers. Had a nice chat.
Copper Foxes
Another nice gift shop. The staff spoke little Welsh but were learning. Enough to do the basics.
