I am reading ‘Hunllef’ by Manon Steffan Ros and have come across the sentence ‘Un oren llachar a hyll oedd y diweddaraf, ac oddi tano un lliw chwd o’r saithdegau.’ (The context is layers of wallpaper). I am stumped by ‘lliw chwd’. My best guess is that this is a misprint for ‘lliw cnawd’ (flesh-coloured? pink?) but maybe I just don’t know enough about wallpaper. Or Welsh. Can anyone help?
Chwd is the Welsh for vomit…

Ah, thank you. Not a colour I’d normally associate with wallpaper, but I suppose that’s rather the point in the book. Also I thought vomit was chwŷd and didn’t know it had an alternative spelling. Anyway, all is clear now!

Chwyd for vomit isn’t incorrect, just not all that widely used. Chwd with emphasis on the oo sound is what is naturally used.
