Hello. I’ve reached lesson 8 and am starting to use the daily listening practice. Are they graded in difficulty? I don’t inderstand the numbering as they all seem to be 1. Also, what is the difference between the daily andthe weekly practices.
Our classes at the Canolfan Llundain Cymraeg have just finished and I intend to pursue my welsh entirely through SSIW now for the summer.
Are you doing the old Course 1, or Level 1? With Level 1, there’s only one listening exercise per 5 sessions, and you just play it as much as you can bear…
With the old Course 1, the daily listening sessions are in three groups - for people who’ve done Lessons 1 to 6, or the whole of Course 1, or the whole of Course 2. So if you’re accessing those for Lesson 1 to 6, they’re all created on the same basis, and you’re just meant to listen to one per day - doesn’t matter in which order…
Just been listening to the new listening practices. The first one is very good. I can see how they will work, being on the loop! I then went on to the second one and despite the machine-like sounds from speeding up the recording, I still managed to understand much of it. I especially laughed at the irony of when Aran asks Catrin if she could speak a little slower!
I am looking forward to the southern versions when they’re ready. In the mean time, these ones are going to get a lot of use!
If you can, try also having Radio Cymru on. I’m consciously learning two or three new words a week from it, but I’m probably picking up a lot more under the radar.
Today’s was ‘safon’.
I just wish I could remember who gave me this brilliant tip.

I strongly second this recommendation. It’s seriously exciting to be listening and to suddenly hear something, for example, from that morning’s SSiW lesson. I’ve also noticed that if I listen to Radio Cymru after playing the new listening exercises for fifteen minutes or so that the real conversation sounds a lot slower. The sentence structure seems to be easier to pick out, even if there are lots of words I don’t know.

That’s actual neurological change kicking in there - exciting!..
