any advice much appreciated thank you
Hi Leigh, which app? Iphone/iOS or Android?
hi android from the playstore
Yup, this is just a timing thing - we’ve been moving towards it for the last few months, and we’re going to do it in two steps - another few weeks and the ‘open to anyone’ stuff will be just the first 5.
It’s because we’ve found that so, SO many more people finish the course and achieve success on the paid courses than on the free material - it doesn’t make much sense to me, but I guess it’s something to do with people putting more value on something they’ve paid for.
But we’re also determined not to shut anyone out who can’t afford it, which is why we’ve been setting up a scholarship system. It’s not very neat and tidy yet, but anyone can apply for either a 50% (or a rarer 100%) scholarship by emailing us at admin@saysomethingin.com…
Just a thought. Is 5 challenges enough to convince those of us who did GCSE Welsh as a 2nd language and then did nothing for years to pay after 5 challenges? I’m not sure I would have done. By the end of Course 1 I was desperate to give you money for more challenges, but wasn’t like that after 5. After 5 I was beginning to think this was a really good method, but asking for money at that point may have made me think again. As I said just a thought.
Yeah, it’s impossible to know for sure what the perfect balance is, and there will definitely be cases where it doesn’t work, but the overall numbers are very clear - we only get about 5% of people going the whole way through the free material…
I have to say I agree somewhat. I came to this site having never done Welsh before, and I wouldn’t have stuck with it if I’d had to pay after 5 lessons. I am now subscribed, but that was after having got through enough lessons to convince myself that I can learn Welsh and also, partly, due to the impending price rise from £3.95 to £10 and I wanted to be grandfathered in!
But then you look at the work that goes into maintaining the forum and creating and updating the content and you recognise that it all takes time and money that has to be recouped.
It must be hard to decide what price point is low enough to encourage people to keep going, but high enough to cover costs.
It is - and it feels a lot harder now that we have full-time staff, to whom we have a very serious responsibility to get it right.
I think that between the new pricing and the scholarship option, we’ll catch most people… fingers crossed…
Always thought I was unusual!
You could do a lot of research, I’ll wager there is an optimum point somewhere. However the distribution is key, how wide that distribution curve is. The question would be what percentage of people would drop off if required to pay for more versus those who drop off because they haven’t committed.
Not particularly helpful, but I’d say it’s probably somewhere between 5 and 25.
