Language Articles, Books, Other

I was looking for a general ‘interesting language-related stuff that’s not about Welsh specifically’ thread and since I couldn’t find one I thought I’d create one and hopefully people will add stuff here.

My contribution…and I can’t believe I didn;t add this sooner…is for those of you who enjoy science science fiction; it’s a story called Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang. The basic story is about a field linguist who is called on to learn an alien language, but there are many other layers. Lots of scientific and ancedotal bits about language structure and acquisition.

If you’re interested in language and linguistics in general, there’s a very interesting magazine put out by the University of Huddersfield http://www.babelzine.com/

They’re also holding an inaugural annual presentation next month which will feature a key speaker who trains actors in different accents - should be very interesting.

Those who like languages and often wonder where one word originates from or wonder what its variations in different languages are, should read this blog https://alexpolistigers.wordpress.com/. Some of you might recognize the author as I found her on the SSiW map, and sometimes I’m asked to give related words in Slovene to be included in her posts. I love how she plays with words, exploring their origins and write all possible variations and translations in any language she has at hand at the time.

I very much recommend the reading and I have no doubt you culd participate through your comments aswell.

Enjoy.
