I froze and have no memory of what just happened, but I’m told I did indeed say some things somehow and that on the whole we had a conversation with Oliver about learning japanese and our visit to the japanese restaurant yesterday, so I’m very happy!
I’m really looking forward to just learning Japanese from now. I think worrying about the call really slowed me down in the last couple days, so I want to pick up the pace now, learn more everyday and find a bunch of people to practice with.
Now we’re done! Feel free to ask any questions!
Massive, massive thanks to the Japanuary team, who have been outstanding.
Cai had to armwrestle with me a little bit to get the time off work (in a sense!) to do Japanuary with us, and I’m so grateful he kept pushing, because he made an absolutely brilliant contribution to the energy and the results - it’s going to be fascinating watching his continuing journey with Japanese over the course of the year.
Tom - what can I say? Japanuary (and the name!) was his brilliant idea in the first place, and he’s been an absolute force of nature about it, part of which you can see for yourselves in his outstanding performance in the livecast video above.
It’s also been Tom and Kai’s work over the last year that has made the new courses an actual, published thing, which is also transformative for us.
It’s been an extraordinary experience. To my own surprise, I now genuinely would like to carry on learning Japanese, so we’re going to have to see if we can afford another ten days in December - out in Japan would be ideal, this time!

This was a great watch. Very inspiring!
Amazing! I’d love to know what your pacing was like throughout the day and how many hours in total? i.e. did you do 5 or 6 hour sessions, or more shorter ones etc? I find doing intense learning I get tired after 30 minutes…did you just smash through that barrier or rest and then do another slot when you had recovered?
We varied quite a bit, but generally went for an hour or two at a time, with brief breaks here and there - really brief, though, and if we were doing stuff like grabbing food we were usually carrying on in app while we did ![]()
We did also start coming out of the app to work on our productive capacity in interactional settings, one on one or the three of us together - we were probably 8+ hours in app on our best days, 4 to 5 hours in app when we were interacting more… but Kai and Tom usually did quite a bit of extras in the evenings, while I was sneaking back off home ![]()
