International Dylan Thomas Day - May 14th 2017

This Sunday is International Dylan Thomas Day and there are quite a few events in Wales and outside - for details see: Not much chance to practice Welsh I’d guess, but you never know… There’s an official (i.e. not SSiW) IDT Day walk in Oxford but only a couple of places left apparently, so you’ll need to hurry if you’re interested!

It seems really strange that our Dylan, who may have been 3 years older than my Dad, but who always seemed more like me in age until I passed him, has an International Day! Like a saint! No - he was no saint! Of course Robert Burns has been celebrated here in Scotland in preference to St. Andrew for years…centuries? But Dylan’s own Day?? Wow! I always loved his writing, prose as well as poetry, but I never expected this!!

Oh, you never know. Whenever people gather to celebrate Welsh culture, there’s always a few Welsh speakers about. When I lived in Sydney, the event there - held on 13 May this year - usually was an opportunity to have a good chat.

The Day has now passed but there’s a brilliant video (about 12 mins) here about the making of Under Milk Wood by members of the Welsh community in Patagonia (and thanks goes to Patagonia150 for the link!):
