What is the difference between ‘ydi e?’ and ‘ife’ ch?’ ?
“ydy e?” is a standard question form. The ‘ife’ in “ife chdi?”/“ife chi” is an interrogative tag used with emphatic sentences.
Thank you Siaron but I am afraid I don’t understand what you are saying.
When you ask a question, you’d use “ydy e…?”, but often people add what we call an interrogative (questioning) tag at the end of a statement which isn’t really a question that needs answering, but is in question form, as in “He’s very good at this, isn’t he?”. ‘ife’ is one of the tags we use in Welsh.
So -
Question - “Ydy e’n dal?” (Is he tall?)
Statement with interrogative tag - “Mae e’n dal, ife fe?” (He’s tall, isn’t he?)
Does that make more sense?
Yes, now I understand. Diolch yn fawr!
And how about pronounciation of ydy e’n and ife fe?
ydy e = uh-dee eh
ife fe = iv-eh veh
