I know what you mean! Iāve been in Wales for a long time now, and so many of my closest friends are first language Welsh speakers, I feel itās important to be able to engage with them in their preferred language.
It is absurd that I cannot fluently speak the language of my late father, a member of the Gorsedd and something of a name in Welsh literary circles. This is what happens if youāre a Londoner albeit one made entirely of Welsh stuff. Although I can speak a certain amount of Welsh my vocabulary is inadequate and needs a big improvement. When this happens Iāll feel a bit more fulfilled.

I want to be a Welsh speaker as growing up in Liverpool, we spent our summers in North Wales & I loved listening to the language. I then lived & worked in South Wales for a few years before moving back to Liverpool. I now have 3 children & I am loving sharing my new knowledge of the beautiful language with them.
Iām Welsh, but have a terrible record of leaning languagesā¦and never had a single lesson of Welsh in school (in 1970s!). Now Iām 56 and really want to try and attain at least a basic conversational capability in Welsh.

I want to become more proficient in Welsh simply because it may help silence the many Saeson who ask me why anyone would want to speak Welsh! Apart from the obvious responses about culture, nationality, and the nearly 1 million who do, does anyone have a better response?
