Greetings! And general question

Shwmae/Hi!

A rather distinguished sounding Welshman who has kindly been sending me short introductory lessons every day recommended that I stop by and say hello. So here I am.

My main question before I begin, and I would like to get other people’s thoughts on this, is that the lessons that I see on the website and the SSiW app that I have are in 30 min+ chunks. I feel that the method is designed as such that in order to get the full impact of a lesson, the entire thing should be completed in one sitting. It’s spontaneous and focused, building on what you have just heard 10, 15 seconds ago. My concern is that if I stop mid-lesson, the impact will not be as good.

Example,

If I’m in the middle of a lesson, I’ve done 10 min so far, and that’s all I can commit to for that day, it seems that if I stop mid-lesson, 10-15 min in, starting mid-lesson tomorrow will not have the full learning impact had I been able to take in a lesson from the start to finish in one sitting.

If you start mid lesson and throw yourself in, your brain just isn’t ready or prepared to recall individual bits and parts than if it had heard it at the beginning of that session, in the short term.

Psychologically, you’re learning this “in the moment”, that seems to be the strength of this method. Having to toss yourself into the audio when you might not be thinking as presently about words than you might be if the lesson is being heard from the start seems like it might present problems.

On the other hand, it may force you to work harder, and that might be a good thing.

I do not know this for sure, it is just my initial sense, and if anyone can assuage this concern or has any insight or thoughts on this matter, I would appreciate hearing them :slightly_smiling_face:

I think that shorter lessons might be more conducive to absorbing material and making an impact.

Are there smaller chunks to be found anywhere besides the 30 min lessons?

To clarify, I’ve just done the starter “one sentence a day” emails and was browsing the basic lessons/challenges included on the website and the SSiW app, which I was planning on downloading to a portable mp3 player that I purchased at the supermarket for £15, so those are the lessons I am referring to.

The distinguished Welshman who has been teaching me so far also related to me that he has made plans to email me in a week, so for all I know the one sentence/10 min a day method might continue, which may mean that these concerns are meaningless.

Apologies in advance if this was too verbose or long-winded. Learning Welsh has been a lot of fun so far and I thought I would express my general thoughts to get a better idea of this program and its design.

Diolch yn fawr iawn,

Ellis

Hi @Ellis

Croeso / welcome. Lots of people split them up and do them in ll sorts of permutations and combinations. The biggest factor which overrides everything is to do it in a way which works for you, which you continue to enjoy.

In particular resuming lessons is not a problem.

Congratulations on starting this journey - to be a Welsh speaker!
