Rhiannon just wants to go to Barry Island to have an ice-cream with her aunt Fflur, but although it’s not far from home, the journey is fraught with danger. Can you successfully guide her to her ice-cream?
I’ve written an interactive fiction game in English and Welsh and it’s available now for free!
The Welsh version is for canolradd+ (or adventurous sylfaen learners!) and it’s a good way to practice your Welsh and pick up some new vocab over the summer.
Please do take a look and let me know if you like it. I had a blast writing it and would really love to do some more!
I gave this a go and it’s great! I’ve recently finished black belt and am looking for more to keep the ball rolling. I would love to have access to as many of these little gems as possible!
Ah, Ymestyn might help then – it’s a collection of vocab and grammar exercises and stuff to read and listen to, designed for intermediate learners.
I’m actually reworking it right now, moving it on to a new platform and reorganising everything into modules, so I’ll post back when that’s done. The new module structure will launch with:
Auxiliary verbs: Dod, Mynd, Gwneud, Cael in the preterite, including using gwneud (and ddaru) to make the preterite of other verbs. (Future tense coming soon)
Adar yr Ardd (Reading): Short pieces with vocab and illustrations about 12 garden birds
Adar yr Ardd (Vocab): As above, but with exercises to actively learn the vocab (to be completed soon)
Mamaliaid Prydain (Reading): Short pieces with vocab about 12 common mammals
Idioms
This, That, These, Those
Game Vocab: Exercises to help you learn the vocab from Mae Rhiannon yn Mynd i Ynys y Barri
And I’ll be working on developing a course to help people do their Dysgu Cymraeg Intermediate homework, which will also launch soon.
I have way more up my sleeve, including more interactive fiction, but hopefully this new site will be easier for people to navigate and choose what they want to do.
That sounds fantastic, very much looking forward to its completion! What’s the best thing to do in the meantime? Here in Tasmania, there’s not a lot of Welsh action . Ideally, I’d fly myself to the North of Wales and get stuck in… easier said than done
Get yourself a graded reader and get stuck in! Or subscribe to Lingo Newydd – they have vocab on each article, and have articles at different levels. You might even be able to get it online from your local library – I used to get it from my local library when I was in the US, which was wild.
I am desperately beavering away, as I will need to get everything ready to launch by mid-Sept, pref earlier, so not long to wait. I hope.
Whereabouts in Tasmania are you? Are you in touch with @susan-w-lewin who lives in Hobart? She often joins in online chat sessions in the Slack groups - SSiW Community Chat for subscribers, and the open Welsh Speaking Practice group.
