I’m looking forward to it too
I’ll try to join in, too, but probably not before 9 pm. See you then.
Sorry folks, i went out for a few hours and it seems a lot happened.
Yes 8 pm Welsh time it is.
If Sunday evening chat is going to become really popular, then there is no reason why it could not start earlier with people attending and leaving in time frames that suit them.
I still need to understand more how these multiple calls work, at 8 o gloch amser cymraeg, i will start the conference call and all those in the list should get some kind of ring tone and an invite to join, just click on the accept button and you should be in.
One person had a bit of trouble with this (as would anyone trying to join latter) but as they were clicking on a button to call me i was getting the message that my attention was wanted (and who from) so i then added them to the call and all was well. (gosh that was a long winded case of Don’t panic)
So if i stop chatting at a strange point, paid poeni amdani it’s possible i am fiddling with controls, just carry on laughing with Tatjana.
I will read more of the skype instructions at some time as i suspect there is a way (hidden) in the file system of making these calls more open. If i ever get it perfect i will do some screen shots with instructions (it won’t be this next week), anyway forwards we go (if slowly) and let the fun continue.
Cheers J.P.
Sorry, but I don’t think I can make it today, I’m actually really tired. Have fun everyone:)
You were missed, it looks like i will open skype earlier next time which will suit some people better.
so, i hope the new people found it useful, strangely one person had trouble joining but the two who joined in later were no problem (the joys of technology)
Cheers J.P.
Hi all,
Is this Skype ‘meetup’ going to be a regular thing from now on? It sounds like you all have lots of fun. Do you want me to add it to the Weekly Email as there is nothing about it there at the moment?
It does sound good if it could be a sort of ‘drop in’ session where it remains open for a period of time and people could come and go as they are able, though I don’t know how that would work in Skype. Perhaps as JP suggests above, people would need to contact him when they’re ready and receive an invitation from him to join. Or, if potential attendees were all included on the initial call email, could they then take that up and join in at any time during the session?
Diolch pawb! It was lovely to ‘see’ you all last night - isn’t Skype amazing?!
Shame I couldn’t stay longer…

I think the group Skype chats are very useful. It is a very different dynamic to one on one (both are valuable in slightly different ways), less talking, but more listening, while also speaking in a setting that uses different tenses (we and you plural etc.).
I think the way the group chat works in Skype doesn’t need anyone in particular to start a conversation or add people (I accidentally clicked call earlier, and it tried to call everyone in the group), and also gives others the option to add people, so If there was to be a longer session @ramblingjohn wouldn’t necessarily need to stay the whole time if he was busy etc.
I don’t actually know how to do what JP was doing, helping people to join mid conversation, so maybe JP would need to impart some of his Skype wisdom
I enjoyed the Skype session last night. it was hard going, but it’s easier with more vocabulary, even if I forget everything once I start speaking!
A weekly fixture would be good.
I’ve just managed to hook my phone up as a webcam, so at least I can watch myself speaking Welsh, which is weird!
Now I just have to work out how to get Skype to recognise the video feed!
Thank you for this one! It made me laugh and cheered my day! I imeddiatelly started to imagine the scene …
Just back of holiday folks , will try to answer some of the questions soon.
Cheers J.P.
Thanks for your kind attention Dee, I don’t think put anything about in the email for now, we probably have enough people on the list (more would overload skype rules).
And i’m not sure where we are going, it’s a fun experiment that seems to be rather useful and time may see it settle into a format that others could use.
I do hope people will post more here as to which words, structures or subjects they would like to use, this of course will only ever be the starting point and conversation can go anywhere which i feel is the real life aspect.
Will it be good for some people if i open the conference at (7 pm Welsh time ) this Sunday.
As ever there are a lot of words phrases to learn on numerous subjects, so to keep the ball rolling i have just been thinking about folklore in welsh and wondering how similar it is across europe and further. so i have looked up some words as a way to try and learn them, (no doubt i will forget them on skype).
llên gwerin - folklore.
Chwedioniaeth - mythology.
Chwediau - Legends.
Llên gwerin : yr credoau traddodiadal , arferion, a straeon o gymuned, basio drwy’r cenedlaethau ar lafar.
Folklore : the traditional beliefs, customs and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth.
Cheers J.P.
It’s fine but I this time probably won’t be there. Good luck to all the others.
Well, first apologies to anyone who received multiple calls they didn’t want tonight (skype was not on it’s best behavior).
Anyway, it was useful and fun. here are some of the words that came up.
Daearyddiaeth – geography.
pasg – easter.
mynychu – attend.
eleni – this year.
anfon at - send to.
hala at- send to.
Mynychu – attend.
trên ager- steam train.
cryf- strong.
gwan – weak.
Cheers J.P.
Sorry, I didn’t quite make it tonight, the football was too exciting! Anyway, now you know why I am the blue dragon!
No, I don’t! Chelsea? Those are the only one I know they have kind of dragon in their emblem. Anyone else?
Chelsea? They have a lion (Llew)! Manchester City FC have a ship on our emblem [to get to Wales more easily]
Sorry, that lion seams more like a dragon to me … but I’m vision impared so … it could be whatever … I was looking at “Man City” but dismissed it since i didn’t see any dragon there.
Thank you for enlightening my horizons.
Well, as every Saturday I had a lovely one and a half hour Cymraeg Skype practice with @brigitte and I thought the @ramblingjohn’s idea of posting some words which were searched as new in conversations for great so I post some of which we (mostly I) didn’t know and we’ve searched for them in our geiriadur.
city = dinas
cities = dinasoedd
big = mawr
whole = cyfan
full = llawn
Don’t be surprised as some of them I surely should know already but forgetful as I am I forgot them and struggled upon them to say. “the bus” is also still thorn in my hill and I’ve checked it while we’ve talked.
the bus = a bws
and there were some more
politics = gwleidyddiaeth
expensive = drud
Afterwards I had nice quite long written conversation with @seren (well, as I write the sgwrs is still going on for the matter in fact) and the words I had to search for were as follows:
Spring = gwanwyn
sun = haul
to shine = sgleinnio
You’re too kind = Ti’n garedig iawn.
cheer = llonni
to dance = dawnsio
music = cerddoriaeth
to imagine = dychmygu
dream = breuddwyd
travel = trafaelio
world = byd
perform = perfformio
dancing group = grŵp dawnsio
truth = wir
life = bywyd
perhaps = efallai
flowers = blodau
Well, you can only imagine what we’ve talked about.
I have no doubt there were many mentioned before but anyway.
EDIT
I forgot to mention that searching the words in sgwrs with Stella it was more for to be written down properly then for I wouldn’t actually know them. It’s many times I still connect speach with writing unproperly and written words wrong can mean nothing or totally different thing so I always check them if I can.
That could be said by so many of us, and the reason i think this is useful. Diolch @tatjana
cheers J.P.
