Excuse me

I was waiting to use the toaster at the hotel this morning and the lady in front of me put her bread at the wrong end of the toaster rack. I wanted to say “excuse me” and point to the right end and I said “disculpe” but I wondered if I should have said “perdón” instead? Also, do either of them work if I need to get past someone who is in my way? I think in Italian I would say “Permesso”

I would use “Perdón” in both of those situations and “Disculpe” more for where you’re actually apologising for something - e.g. if you bump someone trying to get past them, or you need someone’s attention to help you out. In a shop if you see an assistant busy doing something but you need to ask for their help - “Disculpe, ¿me puedes ayudar?”

Thanks Deborah. I wasn’t sure but I didn’t want to use English.

I had to think for a moment as it’s super common for people to use the Basque word here, even if they don’t speak Basque

I’m curious now! What is the Basque word? :grinning:

Quick question; as I’m still in Spain I thought I should buy a dictionary. Any recommendations, please? (But not too heavy, we have been buying clothes and close to the weight limit :grinning:)

Gracias

Barkatu

I can’t really help there. I always use online dictionaries these days - DeepL more than anything. The only paper dictionaries I have are from over 35 years ago when I did my Spanish degree at Uni :joy:

Hola Ailéin, what is the Green App? Is it an iPhone thing I did a search on the App Store but nothing relevant came up

Gracias Tony

Hola Tony
Its on Play Store. Search Microsoft Translator. Its a fantastic free dictionary…i use for everything. Even long translations. It has decent spoken translations. We call it the green app. Become its green in colour. And has like Chinese letters on it.
