"ei" in this sentence

What is the function of the word “ei” in this sentence please?
“Dyna mae Elis yn ei wneud drwy’r dydd”

And what difference would it make if the “ei” was dropped?

(Anyone who has read “Stryd y Bont” would recognise the quote.)

The action of the verb (gwneud) is itself the subject of the sentence, so the possesive adjective ei becomes a pronoun object of the verbnoun.
The word-for-word translation to English is awkward - “That is (the thing) Elis is his doing through the day”, but in Welsh it makes sense.

The ei is often dropped or blended in speech but should be included in written form.
