Ddweddol, wnaeth ddweud etc

hi there- I seem to be coming unstuck with the “who told me” " etc- with dwedodd, ddwedodd, wnaeth ddweud wrtha’i etc - everytime a sentence pops up with one of those I get muddled- can someone tell me when to use each one- I can’t even remember learning wnaeth dweud wrtha’i but it’s there in the vocab so I must have! I know the difference with wrtha’i and wrthot ti but it’s the rest I get mixed up.Can someone please unscramble it for me as that is the main thing I’m getting wrong - not doing too bad otherwise!

There are two ways to form the preterite past, either by conjugating the verb itself, or by using a conjugated form of the auxilliary verb to do (gwneud) + unconjugated verbnoun:

  1. Dwedodd e wrtha i fod e’n dod yfory
  2. Wnaeth e ddweud wrtha i fod e’n dod yfory

There is absolutely no difference in meaning between one or the other, so using either is fine – just use the one you’re more comfortable with, or whichever comes to mind first.
